Confused with glass options.

Post by MAC13 » 19 Jul 2017, 9:50 am

Hi, so i have just ordered a ruger ranch rifle in 223.
I have know idea of what scope to put on it.
Keeping in mind it has a 16 ich barrel on it.
I only wanted a rifle that would be easy to carry around. Im mainly going to shoot foxes and some bunny busting.
I was thinking vortex 3x9 or 4x12 or maybe a 2x7.
Is it worth going up to 50mm lense?
Opinions please.

I have a 3-9x40. The 50 will give you about another 4-5 minutes in the evening.
Not worth it in my view. But then I'm tight. What do others think?

any of the scopes you are looking at will work good i wouldnt worry about a 50mm lens and i dont think the ruger rings that come with it will work you will have to get taller rings.
nice choice in rifle let us no what you think when you get it

I have a 3-9x40 on my .243 never had any issues. Rarely take it off 4x but I also don't take shots much over 150meters due to the country I use it in.

As always you get what you pay for with scopes if low light shooting is the go you need to spend at least what you paid for the ruger to get the best results if its a light weight rig leupold scopes are some of the lightest out there

As said above Leupold do some of the lightest scopes around. I have a a couple of 2-7X33's and a 3-9X33 ultralite. All would be a good fit in a light weight .223 imho but there's not a lot wrong with their 3-9X40 either.

I have a 3-9 on my 223 and honestly i more often have it set to 6-7 or less. I'd say a 2-7x40 would suit just fine but if it's hard to find a 3-9 would be fine too. Instead of shelling out for bigger lenses, spend that same money by stepping up a notch in glass quality.

What is you budget for this scope?

IMO, in the bush a 3x9, 4x12 or a 2x7 is all you need and will cover just about any situation. I've got a 4-12x44 Vortex on the 243w and use it at 4 or 5x and the only time I use 12 power is at the range. Regarding brands, what suits the pocket.

So i bit the bullet and got leupold firedot in 3x9 40mm. Looks very clear.
The rifle handles very well in the hand.
Now i just have to wait until next weekend before i can use it.
I will let everyone know how the rifle and scope go.
Thanks everyone for your input. Cheers

Good stuff...

Bloody choosing scopes to a budget is just a pain in the arse!
So easy to get bogged down in choice. Well done, now you can get out and shoot.
