scope for 22-250

Post by scoobs » 09 Dec 2017, 8:27 am

gday all,

quick question, i have a t3x 22-250 varmint rifle on its way, looking at getting a 2.5-15x50 scope for it. reckon this will be a good magnification level for a 22-250? thinking it should be a good allround scope.

thanks in advance

I certainly think so, I use a leupold vx2 6-18 on mine and find it plenty

The low end might be great in tight stuff. I used to run a 6-18 on a 22-250 and run one on my 25-06.

its either the 2.5-15x50 with illuminated reticle or a 6-24x50 that are on my list at the moment

Either will be good, the primary use for the rifle should tell you which is the more useful option.

A mate uses the 2.5 - 15 extreme and reckons it's great value for the money. He owns a Zeiss Diavari, so knows good glass.

The 250 can reach out and I prefer 18 x as a minimum. But, you cant hit what you can't see and better clarity at a lower magnification, particularly at night, is worth paying for.

I have a Leupold VX2 4-12x50 on my 22-250 which is plenty for this cartridge. They are reasonably priced and the 50mm objective lets plenty of light through when spotlighting.

Unlike Brett, Im blind so i prefer 18X, i dont think 12X is enough for a 22-250...infact i run a 5-25 Zeiss on mine.

If you are looking at the Bushnell Trophy Extreme 2.5-15x50 with the LR600 reticle, just be aware that the bullet drop hash marks may not suit a flat shooter like the ol' 250..
I cant see how 2.5X / or anything less than 4x (or even 6x) is going to be any good for much on a 22-250...if you need to zoom back to 2.5X then you are at least a good 100+yards too close & so you could probably save the round & kick the rabbit...! (hehe)...but the illuminated reticle is a bonus.

I also run the 6-24 extreme on a 204 & find the cross hairs pretty fat (thick), which annoys me on the odd occasion i use it during the day, but its great under spotlight which is predominantly what i use it for...

Having both those scopes & two 22-250's, id suggest the 6-24 which has a varmint type reticle will be more suited to the 250, unless you particularly want an illuminated reticle.

For what its worth, recently I was looking at this Bushnell.... http://shop.thegunnery.com.au/optics/bu ... scope.html

But after comparing side by side I chose this hawke model...... http://shop.thegunnery.com.au/optics/ha ... ksman.html

With the two side by side I felt that the hawke had better clarity, was easier to zoom, and I preferred the reticle

FWIW...i had my Zeiss 5-25 with varmint reticle next to the Bushnell Trophy extreme on Monday, on both paper targets at 100 yds, & bunnies out to 200...
And i can definately say, that while i think the Zeiss reticle is thick, the Bushnell is definately thicker...
