Ranger Scopes

Post by Oldbloke » 13 Dec 2017, 3:06 pm

I'm looking for a respectable 3-9x40 rifle scope for a 3006. It won't get a lot of use so not keen on spending a fortune. I'm a tight are anyway. :D I already have a Sightron on a 3006 and was looking for another to match but not many lgs down my way seem to stock them.
So I have been offered a Ranger 3-9x42. At what seems a good price. I will have a look at it on Friday. Has anyone got one and would they recommend them? Price range is up to about $280

The Sightron are meant to be pretty good scopes I have only seen the bigger target style though in a whole other price range. I hate the idea of sharing a scope between rifles but it may be an option. My next scope will be the Nightforce 15*55 -52 competition really nice glass the reticle is a bit fine though. Then all the scopes will be reshuffled onto other guns. I just bought some new toys that will get old Simmons scopes from the 80's that have been in the bottom draw, I really didn't need the toys and should have bought the scope.

Athlon are not bad for the money, pretty cheap, nice and clear for what you pay

got one on the 308 its not bad, owned by a bigger scope company, cant remember which the bloke at the gunshop said.

He gave me the best advice when looking at scopes, especially cheap ones go to the gun shop on a overcast day, and look through them outside when you have less light.

I believe your better served to check them on a bright sunny day...
The cheap ones have coatings to increase apparent contrast so looking through them on overcast day/even light they "appear" brighter & clearer
.
If you check on a sunny day, you can see how much detail they resolve in the dark shadows--thats often much less on cheap scopes...
Detail in highlights & shadows is what you want.

Just my 2 bits worth...
Cheers
