3-9x40 or 4-14x40 on .223 & .308

Post by JimTom » 07 Jan 2018, 1:23 pm

G’day Everyone
I have two Bushnell scopes, a 3-9x40 and a 4-14x40. I originally purchased the 4-14 to go on my .308 and the 3-9 for the .223.
I have loaded the .308 with 155gn for pigs and 55gn for the .223 for dingoes.
I have been giving it some thought and think that maybe the 4-14 would be better for the .223 as I could potentially be shooting at longer ranges.
In hindsight I think that two 3-9x40 would have been sufficient however the bloke who sold them to me was very persuasive.
Anyone offer any advice on which way they would go. Thanks in advance.

I wouldnt worry about having a scope to 14x...Nothing wrong with more magnification if weight increase is negligible & optic quslity doesnt suffer....
You will use the extra mag--especially load testing & long shots on bunnies...!

223 is for smaller game. So high mag on that one. But might depend more on the type of country you are hunting in. If it's very open the higher mag will be best. Reverse for scrubby or bushy country.

I have 3-9x40 on both 223 & 3006.

I'd put the 3-9x40 on the 308 - slightly better field of view, quicker to find target and the 4-14x40 on the .223. Shooting feral dogs the larger magnification might come in handy.. I've got a 4-12x44 on the 243w for dogs and works OK..

Thanks again all. I’m leaning towards the 4-14 on the .223 for the reasons you have already stated.
Thanks for the help. Always good to get an opinion from those who know more than you do.

A 9x will get the job done, a 32x will improve your groups at the range.
