AP100 Load for 38 Special/357 Magnum ??

Post by SPRINT-GTO » 27 Jan 2020, 10:16 pm

I load for 38 Special & 357 Magnum shoot 125 grain lead conicals in both.
Have recently run out of AP70 & looks like it will be a while before ADI has their AP650 (replacement for AP70) on the market.
However have almost a kilo of Ap100 & would like to use this.
However Adi or Harvey do not list an AP100 load for 38 Special/357 Magnum .
Can anybody that is using AP100 where they obtained their load figures from.
Any assistance greatly appreciated.

G'day SPRINT-GTO,
The reason you see very little data is because it is not a good powder for those rounds. The only data you see today for AP100 is for heavy (180g +) hunting loads. It will burn quite dirty unless you crimp tight, not a great idea for lead projies. In the past I have loaded 158g JHP with 5.2g of SR4756 which Hodgden used to list but I don't think they still do, I have Issue 13 which still lists 5.4 of SR4756 for 140g JHP as 38SPL +P and be aware you can slip into +P pressures fairly quickly from what you may think is standard 357 loadings. Loads really need to be developed over a chrony. Best bet is to find some Unique or Green Dot until the new powders come out, or chase down some Blue Dot data and start low, Cheers..

Sounds like that powder is part of your favorite load(s). I did use it a while back but switched to Trailboss, mainly because I just target shoot and I thought that AP70 was a tad "dirty". I have mates that I shoot with looking at AP100 with mixed results.
Some of them contacted ADI and got some info (apparently) on the AP 100 powder for 38spl and 357mag, mainly for 158grn SWC
and 148grn DEWC (I use these in my 357 and i have them to be very good with Trail Boss.
Sorry I can't help you any further at the present time.

If it is for target use out of a handgun, I would consider the 38/357 loads with 125gn conicals as pretty much a standard load, but not for AP70, more so AP50 (generally load at 3.7gn in 38SPL).

I only do heavier loads in the 357 using AP100 (8.0 - 8.5gn) and 180gn plated projectiles. (Thompson Contender for MS Field Pistol).

As even AP50 is a bit hard to get now, you could possibly try for some APS 350/450 and work on the listed loads from ADI.

I have used AP100 in both 9mm, 38 and 357, 357sig and 40S&W
I have been using AS30N lately because of its economy in comparison.

I have a printout from an online data sheet from ADI load manual for 357mag Pistol
Out of a 10" barrel

125gn hornady XTP, 1,590 OAL, 10.3 gn AP100
158gn Hornady XTP 1.593 OAL 8.7 - 9.0 gn AP100
180gn Speer TMJ 1.70? OAL 7.0 - 8.2 gn AP100

Looking up an older ADI manual I have in my room,
I have the following for AP100

357magnum 6"
110gn Jacketed 14.6gn
120gn lead 13.5gn
148gn LWC 5.5-0.1gn
160gn lead 9.4gn
160gn jacketed 9.9gn

38 special 4"
90gn jacketed 8.1gn
110gn jacketed 7.3gn
120gn lead 6.9gn
148gn LWC 5.8gn
160gn lead5.6gn
160gn jacketed 5.8gn

Hi Roger,
I have the same issue with finding data for AP100...
Would it be OK for you to share with me, the load details you used for 9mm and AP100?
I would greatly appreciate it.

thanks,
Mike

I tried AP100 when I was looking for a light load for 357 Sig with 185 gn projectiles. It worked, but there were plenty of bits of unburnt powder which prevented cases from feeding into the chamber in a semi-auto. A light load in AP70 had no problems with unburnt powder.

In a revolver you may find unburnt particles of AP100 to be less of a problem for reliable operation.

PS - the 2004 4th edition of the ADI reloading booklet has AP100 data for 38 Special and 357 Magnum. Copies are online.
