My brand new second hand S&W 686 6inch ..... :D aint she grand lol...

I bought this little beauty a couple months ago with a red dot on top.. For reasons I hate the red dot, and want to return the wee beastie to iron sights.

Ive never seen a front sight like this one before, .. can anyone shed some light on what Im looking at here. ? and what/how I find a matching rear sight for her. ?

Thanks in advance for any help. :)

From a forum post I came across which quotes the Standard Catlog of S&W:

In 1986 S&W came out with the 586-1 with The Target Champion {4-Position}sight on it. In 1987 They came out with the 586-2 and offered this sight Package until The 586-3 which came out in 1988 and in 1992 in the same dash series that ended that year, they deleted the 4 Position sight before making the 586-4 series in 1993. It came on either the 6" Barrel shown or the Longer 8-3/8" Barrel Models

It was designed for silhouette shooters and you can easily adjust your front sight for different distances.

I have a 686-3 and was the sight fitted at time purchase Jun 99.

I cannot recall if they were optional and I opted for it, or it was just how it came.

Yes. I had one on my S&W 586 some time back and it was for metallic silhouette shooting. It was a pain to use so I ditched it and put a regular front sight blade I got from Grycols.

The 4 position front sight requires a S&W rear sight with a high (.410 thou) blade - I have 2 x 686-3's with the AFS - also have a Millet sight with the .410 blade
Try Grycol in Sydney -they are the S&W agents

Did you find a factory rear sight? I'm after one too.
