AR style Pistol legal for category H?

Post by dansivan » 28 Jul 2020, 12:06 pm

I was wondering if it is legal to have an AR-15 style pistol (less than 75cm OAL) in Australia on a category H license? I believe Wedgetail Industries make AR style guns manufactured here in Australia but does anyone know if they can be purchased on a category H license or Cat D only?

Read the following from bottom up as it is an email chain from WLB QLD.

They have been a bit of a hot issue. Technically a pistol, reality a SBR without a stock. Jumps through similar loopholes to the US pistol brace saga.

The closest thing now legal in Aus is the Ruger PC Charger. Kinda like the Wedgetail, except it's in 9mm. It would be pretty interesting to see a charger pistol based off the mini-14 in .223 if they ever deicde to make one.

Rule of thumb: If something is only legal on a technicality, they'll ban it anyway

Even if you could manage to get one and had a club that would let you shoot it in the mandatory comp that you would have to do to keep it, I think its skating on thin ice and has every possibility that the Govt. would ban it at some point.

One of the members at my pistol club has a Mac 10 and an Uzi pistol, I'm not sure on what kind of licence (target shooting or collecting). But he says they're totally legal but the club won't let him to shoot it at the range.

I'd like to see a Charger built off a Deer field carbine in 44 mag

A straight pull/lever release version of the Ruger PC Carbine would be awesome. Using cheap 9mm ammo and it being tacticool without (most likely) running afoul of appearance laws would be great

If it's the guy I'm thinking of in QLD they are on a normal target license. He can't shoot them anywhere else either. He tried coming to my club once years ago.
