I looked at moonclipping via a smith at one point for my GP100 but never went ahead. I now use safariland comp 3 jetloaders they are great for a quick alternative.

I totally disagree with those suggesting that you use speed loaders instead of moon clips. Maybe they shoot matches where speed reloads are not a requirement. For anything else a moon clip smashes speed loaders.

Most of the guys were using moonclips but some were using speed loaders, I think it's going to come down to price and availability.

I think mainly it comes down to whether you're re willing to accept the limitations of moon-clips. Not being able to top the revolver up during a course of fire, rounds coming loose from the clips, not being able to use loose rounds when you run out of clips, and the general bulk of carrying loaded moon-clips. the bulk is similar to speedloaders, but without the option of carrying loose or "flat-pack" speed-strips. With a moon-clip revolver you can only feed it with moon-clips. It's basically an en-bloc clip like an M1 Rifle or Mannlicher action, the clip is a required part of the firearm to make it function.

Well, you've sold me on speed loaders, loading individual rounds into the cylinder is part of the fun when speed isn't a factor.

Most moon clip revolvers using a rimmed cartridge function fine without a moon clip. Cases rim space on an uncut area of the cylinder. The centre star may or may not eject the cases, depending on the calibre and this is the main consideration.

It sounds like you are not doing IPSC or icore, so anything you decide to use should be fine. Moon clips come into their own when you have to do multiple fast reloads under time pressure in a match. Whichever system you choose, have fun shooting the wheel gun.

I didn't realise realise anybody made moon-clip revolvers for rimmed cartridges, what's the point behind that?

If you want to use .38/.357 anyway I don't think anybody makes moon-clip .38's. Moon-clips are used for cartridges that don't have rims, like 9mm, 10mm and .45ACP.

Which cartridges are you shooting in moon-clips?

Ummm ..... 38/357 is one of the most common moon clips available.
The S&W 627 vcomp 8 shot comes factory set up for 38/357 moon clips.

Quite a few guys cut 38 Special cases down to Short Colt length in moon clips for quicker loading.

Anyway, here is a site with a comprehensive list of moon clips for S&W, Ruger, etc.

https://tkcustom.com/products?filter_ca ... h=&sortby=

Here is what a 38 Special cut for moon clips looks like. Cases inserted without a moon clip will still rim space on the cylinder face.
