[NSW] Acquiring a second handgun in same caliber?

Post by curiosity » 01 Oct 2021, 6:55 pm

New shooter here. Anyone have any experience with acquiring a second pistol in the same caliber in NSW? Are there any rules or guidelines on that? I've heard you need to justify the reason why your current firearm isn't sufficient.

I'm starting off with a Glock 17A - 9mm, but might upgrade to a fancier firearm for bigger competition events. Could I keep the glock for general target shooting and purchase an additional firearm in 9mm as well? Or would I have to sell the glock to get an additional firearm, seeing as they'll both be 9mm?

Is this enough of a reason to get a second 9mm handgun? Or do I have a high chance of being rejected?

TIA!

Hi Mate
Yes, you can have more than than one pistol in the same caliber.
You have to be able to justify it with your club. Your club will have to OK it.
Speak to your club officials before you purchase any new firearm and see if they will give you the OK.
They can advise you.
Good luck

Agreed. I had two 9mm (CZ and Glock), and currently have 2 S&W in 38spl. It is not a problem as long as you use them regularly. Otherwise, imo, a wast of money.

Nothing is illegal so long as you can justify a genuine reason, just detail why you need the firearm.

The Glock is dangerous to be used in a holster as it contains no external safety and has to much muzzle flip so can not be used effectively for practical shooting so you need "insert pistol" which contains an external safety and less muzzle flip.

My thumb can not articulate effectively to hit the safety on my 1911 in an effective manner so I need a Sig P320 for metallic silhouette 25m and 50m but can not use the Sig when we wear holsters because it is dangerous for myself because it contains no external safety so I need ."insert pistol" with an external safety.

I need the Ruger PC charger for metallic silhouette 200m matches as the stock allows me to maintain a safe grip on the firearm and hit the target effectively.

No justification you just put in a PTA for a pistol I have a few 9mm and a Few .22
I HAVE NOT BOUGHT ONE SINCE THEY CHANGED THE RULES NOT 100% SURE
Check with you club sectary but once you have one in that cal you have target pistol your just getting another tick target pistol you just need your cops number from you safe inspection

you did search for info online in not this comes up

What do I need to apply online?
To apply online, you will need the following:

A MyServiceNSW Account
Proof of identity documents (e.g. Driver licence and Medicare card). If you have previously completed this process and saved your identity documents, this step will not be required
Your current firearms licence or permit number
The full address where you will store the firearm
If you are applying for a Category H PTA for the Genuine Reason of Target Shooting you must provide a COPS Event Number to confirm you have adequate safe storage unless you’re storing your firearms at your club. You may contact your Local Licencing Police to obtain this information. A safe storage inspection is not required for each PTA; rather, your arrangements need to continue to meet the safe storage requirements as set out in section 41 of the Firearms Act 1996.
A good reason for acquiring a firearm – Select a reason from the options provided which most closely describes your purpose for acquiring the firearm
A current credit card (Visa or Mastercard) for payment, if applicable (see Fee Information section)
If you hold a probationary pistol licence and are applying to acquire a handgun for sport/target shooting within the second six months of the licence, you will also need to attach your Pistol Firearms Safety Training (PPL) Completion Certificate.

I just did my first PTA since getting my full cat H and having my safe inspection. Online process was easy but had to use 2 pieces of ID, drivers license and medicare card which were verified online. Selected H6 (specialised target pistol that has short barrel), selected reason, selected club (you need club's approval number) and paid.
Even though i was already logged into service NSW I had to login again after verifying ID. Hopefully in just over 30 days I should have my PTA and can pick up my pistol I purchased last year

I think it probably depends on your club secretary, he might want to know why you need the gun you want to get when you already have one, or he might not care and trust that you know what you are doing. It is ultimately up to him with what he tells the registry which is why it is a good idea to talk to him first. When you lodge a PTA application they will email him and all he really has to say to them is confirmation that you are a financial member of the club and that the club shoots comps that your wanted pistol is used for, which (unless it falls under H6 "short barrel length" or large calibre classes) is any pistol when H5 is your option. But you still want to have a talk with him anyway, at the very least just so he knows to expect that email about you in the near future.
I recently bought my second pistol and it is a rimfire just like my first one is. I told my secretary this before applying for the PTA and he was fine with it, so I guess it is fine. I don't know, I don't know what this new law is so I am hoping the registry won't be calling me for any reason about it in the near future.
How would they even know if you were using both or just one or the other? I intend to use both as often as I can but it is stupid that I should HAVE to.

Reason?

Mate, they just approve it.

Its a rubber-stamping game to say the least. If you want it because it will let you 'be more effective due to handling and reload speed' or 'target aquisition and confirmation' reasons in the competition then go for it. Pretty sure they don't even ask that here also, just a generic box that says 'justified for new target shooting or competition discipline' type thing.

Live a little. Go get 'er, son.
