22LR Pistol - Plinking fun!

Post by aaronjo » 17 Jun 2015, 3:53 pm

I've having a lovely time with my Walther but being 9mm whenever I bring her out she's costing me lots! It does'nt help that I have a heavy trigger finger and I go through ammo like crazy (she's like a high maintainence girlfriend, good time in the sack but it's gonna cost ya).

So now I'm in the market for a quickie 22LR pistol for cheap fun at the range when I'm not shooting the PPQ (the other girl that you do when hot stuff is'nt available).

I'm happy to spend a decent amount on the pistol as long as it's worth it in terms of reliabilty, accuracy, etc. as it will save me heaps in the long run on ammo.

Not looking for a pistol for the Olympics with those weird grips and laser gun like looks but would like a precision shooter that I can still machine gun for fun occasionally.

Lots has been said about the Ruger and the Buckmark but apparently they are a pain to clean and with rimfires being as dirty as they are...

Then theres the semi pro guns like the Beretta 87 and the Hammerli X-esse which are apparently very accurate.

Also available are 22LR versions of 9mm's like the M&P 22, Walther does a few too and the Ruger SR22.

So what should I get to scratch my shooting itch?

Tanfoglio force L22.
Very accurate, easy to strip down.
Similar to a CZ75 set up.

Smith & Wesson Model 41.

Has a 1911 angle grip (within a degree) and is very accurate apparently. Very reliable on CCI SV ammo so it is cheap to run and reliable. This is often an issue with some European pistols.

They look nice.

My suggestion is buy one of everything :-)

Becoming all the rage in the US apparently with the increasing cost of ammo (or what they think is expensive anyway  not compared to here  )

Lots of pistols and rifles normally not chambered in it now converted to .22lr for cheap running.

I'm thinking about selling a Browning Medallist - it's old (made in the 1960's I think) but shoots incredibly straight. It does have a thumb rest grip though. I came 2nd in a 25 yard match recently (surprised the fecal out of me as I love shooting centre fires).

In NSW, I'm required to shoot 4 matches per year (one handed, 25 & 50 yard one handed shooting) with it, which I hate. Practicing 2 handed is easy.

Are you reloading your 9mm? Hell of a lot cheaper to reload than buy factory or reloaded ammo if you're a regular shooter.

PM me if you're interested in talking about the Medallist.

I'm only looking to sell it as I have problems shooting ISSF style matches with a dodgy back.

Went to the LGS and handled a bunch of them and I have to say I'm surprised that I fell in love with the Beretta 87.

Feels great, I aquire the target with the sights really quick and overall just seems right for me.

Doing a bit of research before plonking down the dosh...

I reckon you are on the money with a 22 for plinking. I have a Ruger Single Six with a little dot scope on it and love it. Accurate easy to clean and cheap to run.

I also have a Smith and Wesson 460 XVR, and if had to have a choice between the two, I would pick the little Ruger.

Cheers Baz.
