Pistol barrel life vs rifles

Hi guys,

Just wondering, is pistol barrel life and accuracy on a similar line to rifles?

With the much smaller powder charges do they still wear from the heat or whatever, or last way longer?

I'm no expert but I put many thousands through my 9mm and it shot exactly the same from new until I sold it.
Even after several hundred rounds it certainly never got as hot as any of my centrefire rifles do in just a couple shots.

I would think other parts of the handgun will wear out before the bore does, and pistol barrels are cheap anyway, especially autos.

Rifle barrel life also varies a lot depending on how hot you run it. If you only shoot light loads through even a .220 Swift it'll probably never wear out.

Far, far less pressure and heat in a pistol barrel.

Nothing like the wear of a larger CF chambered rifle.

For comparison SAAMI says max pressure for .45 ACP is 19,000psi and max for a .308 is 62,000psi.

Honestly, I doubt that I'll ever "shoot out" a rifle's or pistol's barrel. But I'd guess that you'd shoot out a magnum's barrel before you do a non-magnum.
I've been asked: "How many guns do you need to have?" My answer remains the same: "One more."
