1911 22lr advice

Post by Heckler303 » 25 Jan 2017, 12:16 pm

Hey all, looking into finally getting around to acquiring cat H, been looking around a lot for a variation of a 1911 in cheaper calibers to suit my budget. The German sports guns 1911s seem to fit the bill, but would like to ask around here if anyone has, or has used a 22LR 1911, and what models are recommended. Currently, the GSG is the best option for the money. I'm looking heavily at getting the target model as well, if I the piggy bank stretches that far. Then again, I'm seeing them come up for 500-700 AUD when colt and kimber models can cost twice as much. I've also spotted Sig Saur 1911s in 22LR and they sometimes go for even less, there's for sale right now just on 500, and it actually looks a little nicer than the GSG.

Any help would be great, or advice on 22lr pistols in general would be very appreciated.

Heckler303: I have a Walther made 1911 in 22LR, imported by UMAREX, here in the USA it is sold under the Colt banner.

It is a nicely made gun which has so far fed and fired every brand of ammo I've tried. The trigger is decent, around 6 pounds would be my guess and the reset is also good. The sights are windage drift adjustable and are easily seen by my 60 yr old eyes. The controls are just like you'd expect on a 1911, as is slide removal. The gun has a nice heft to it and is fun going after paper or reactive targets.

Since I inherited mine I can't comment on pricing, but I do like the gun.
I've been asked: "How many guns do you need to have?" My answer remains the same: "One more."

Do you want something that looks OR shoots well?

I've got 4 22 Pistols though technically 1 is a combo 22/10mm (Kimber 1911 10mm with a 22lr conversion kit). The best of them accuracy wise is the Volquartsen then Beretta 87 followed by the Ruger Mk3 Competition and lastly the Kimber 22LR. Best value for money at the moment is the Ruger Mk3 as it's being sold off cheap due to the Mk4 arriving on shelves. Barrel length and sight radius are big contributors to accuracy and these are generally not something available in a 1911 style package. Weirdly enough the Volquartsen is marketed as a 1911 Scorpion but the only thing it has in common with a 1911 is the grip angle and size.

Same basic gun as I have, mine is the "Rail Gun" version, older brother inherited the NM version. By the way, I've read that safeties, trigger and trigger components , as well as mainspring and it's housing all interchange with centerfire 1911 parts, as do the grips.

The GSGs I have shot where nasty (could have been ammo as range uses cheap s**t). The takedown pins fell out while shooting on one and so many fail to feed and FTE (again ammo could be to blame for FTE being cheap crap and not fully working slide).

These were range GSGs but after trying 3 there I changed my mind about a 1911 22.

Colts 1911 are made by walther as someone mentioned and dont feel too bad, one I used was an FDE rail and not too fussy on ammo.

Chiappa make a 1911 22 as well which does look nice but havent seen one in the flesh but would like to try one.

22 can get quite dirty and the firing pin channel and hole need to be regularly cleaned.

I looked at at few of the lightweight 1911 22LR about 2 years ago but decided not to purchase due to excessive wear and tear on a a friends GSG with 5000 rounds.

I purchased a CZ Kadet 22LR conversion (all steel) on a CZ Shadow frame.

If I was planning to keep a 1911 22 for more than a year I would look at a quality centrefire 1911 (Springfield, STI, Kimber) and a quality 22LR conversion kit. This would likely be 3 to 4 times the cost of a GSG.

I also have a Ruger 22/45 (MkIII) but you need to add $150 for a Volquartsen sear and hammer.

Thanks a lot for the advice, and to answer Brett; I would like to have a 22LR handgun that shoots well, but I, like many other people, are drawn to the aesthetics of the classic 1911 frame with a modern coat of paint. Partly so I can train in mock situations and shoot cheaply. I was hoping to even find a model that will take a conversion kit to upgrade to 9mm or 38 super in the future, but I haven't found anything like one yet. Nor seen any compatibility reports.

:o Wow, a gold cup? I've seen them go for $600+, how much would you willing to sell it for? Oh, unfortunately the cat H is probably going to take me all this year so purchasing it now or making you wait isn't really an option. Thanks for showing me though mate, how well has it worked for you?

If you like the feel of the frame of the old 1911 I would strongly suggest a Ruger 22/45 lite
Affordable to buy new. Got the 1911 grip but eats .22. Comes with a nice long picatinny rail to mount whatever optics you like,or not. I use a seeall sight and it works great , only when you install the volquartsen trigger, as the out of the box one is a little rough

I'm also really considering a GSG 1911 style 22. Have heard mixed reviews they are not made as well as others, and the disassembly can be a somewhat tedious process compared to other pistols - however the price for a new unit seems reasonable and dealers seem to have them in stock.

Last time I purchased a pistol they did have a few new GSG's in stock for around $575. Think this might be the next one for me. Althought extra mags can be expensive?
