Most of you know I have a fetish for large caliber rifles but this also extends to hand guns. This week I added a Magnum Research BFR (Big Frame Revolver) but more popularly referred to as a Big F#$king Revolver. This particular model is made from S/S, has a 10" barrel and chambered in 45-70 Govt. which takes a bit of hanging onto even for someone experienced with large caliber handguns. It certainly has a bit of a kick to it but not as much as I was expecting, maybe similar to a 50AE or 500 S&W. First shots were 20 rounds of Federal 300gr JHP just to get a feel for it and adjust the sights and a picture below is of a 5 shot group at 15m (I need to work on my grip
). On the subject of grips the standard ones are made from a hard rubber type materiel that offers Zero cushion, I've got a set of Pachmayr "Decelerator" grips on order from Brownells Aus. that should be more comfortable.
I didn't get round to fitting the scope as I need to drive out a 1/16" roll pin to remove the rear sight and the bastards stuck firm. I will try again and if necessary I will drill it out when I get a bit of time. Don't judge the accuracy based on the picture below as that's more me and my failing eyesight with open sights blowing that group out rather then the pistol. I'm heading down to Mildura Thursday night for the last of the 50Cal competitions this year so I'll pack the BFR and have some fun on the 100m gong if I manage to get the scope fitted. I also have access to a 500 S&W and 50AE so I will try to video a bit of a comparison of how they recoil.
I bought some Hornady 325gr FTX ammo cause I was too lazy to move the 400kg of crap in front of my main ammo safe at home to get to the stuff I had. I noticed on the boxes that it's marked "Not for use in revolvers" but the body of that ad on their site says the opposite. I have no idea why Hornady specifically says not to use that round in revolvers, the BFR is rated for Bear Loads which is about as hot as you can buy. Till I figure this out I ended up just buying a box of Federal although I did fire 4 rounds of the Hornady without the world ending.
Next mods on this pistol will be to get the scope sorted and I'm meeting with a gunsmith on Wednesday about another project but I'll see if he can thread the barrel on this thing for a compensator.
Wylie27 came along to get some action pictures and he shot the video in the link below. Now that the initial post is done I'm hoping he'll add some of his pictures showing the near perfect ring of fire from the muzzle.
