Shooting Activities Reason - NSW Handgun PTA

Post by bullzeye » 21 Feb 2018, 9:49 pm

Hi Guys,

I’ve sent in another PTA, the $30 has been taken and I should receive the PTA in a week or 2.

Here is a sample of the PTA form: https://www.police.nsw.gov.au/__data/as ... v._1.5.pdf

My question is regarding section E and the ‘target shooting activies’ box. Usually I put in ‘Rimfire match’ or ‘centrefire match’. I wanted to get another revolver and sent the form in with ‘rimfire match’ but have changed my mind and want to get a centrefire.

Does the FAR actually enforce what is put in this box. If I put in rimfire match can I only get a rimfire? or will there be a problem later on if I buy a centrefire?

I don’t recall on the completed PTA forms any reference to rimfire or centrefire, it just says something like H5 Handgun.

I would ask the guys at the club, but it will probably be 2 weeks till I go there again.

Appreciate any advice

Pretty sure the PTA will have the designation you applied for on it. If you ticked rimfire, it will have rimfire on it and that is what you can buy.
Top right hand corner of PTA has a heading, "type of firearm to be purchased", that will be for the type that you applied for, ( rimfire handgun ) and that is all you can get with that PTA.

I have previously had a PTA for a competition "rimfire" and bought a centrefire with it. I am in NSW.

No issues came through in their usual slow process.

As it says on the PTA section E is to be filled out by a club authorized official (not the applicant)
Gamerancher H9 centerfire is when your on PPL restricted to centerfire or rimfire H8 Not both
H5 PL Not to sure about the issuing but I do remember when I went from ppl to pl they sent out new registration papers changing them all to H5 and normally just put target shooting in the club activity and X in H5
Ring far and ask them if its an problem before issue .

Ok, thanks for that. You can see why I said what I did though, didn't twig that he maybe had full licence.
Still cannot fathom the rule that you can't have a rimfire and a centrefire on PPL.
So a centrefire and a black-powder cap and ball now reside in my safe.
Full licence in 3 more months so restrictions lifted?

The handgun regs are totally f*cked up. The way I got stuffed around almost made me give up, but then, I reckon that's their idea.
Been licenced for longarms for over 30 years, have had a full federal police / interpol check done for an explosives licence, none of that counts,
it's back to square one for a handgun licence, what a crock of sh!t.

Got hold of a nice Kimber 1911 Stainless II in 9mm. I've shot a couple of these guns that belonged to mates, ( one 9mm, one .45ACP ) and I just like 'em.
Yeah, it has a rimfire slide, just waiting for the restrictions to be over and we'll licence it.

Thanks for the reply guys.

I have a full license, just can’t remember what they put on the issued PTAs and if there is any restriction to the shooting activities reason.

The activities reason is kinda stupid. I mean you are restricted to target shooting at an approved range and must compete in x number of comps. What else could you put. or anything else you put would end you up in trouble. Dont do the cheeky bomb joke at the airport when they give you a hard time. Same Same

The registry told me and i quote " it seems everyone got guns for christmas and we are behind"

Hope yours comes in quicker than that.

I've had the exact same experience as Wylie27, but and this is a big BUT never be too specific with the "Genuine Reason" on the form. It's enough to say "Target shooting competition" or name a comp that allows both rimfire & centre fire. At the end of the day you have signed a statement stating rimfire then proceeded to buy a centre fire, the chances of it coming back to bite you are probably zero but there's always that chance.
