Bushranger Covert winch

Post by Wes » 29 Aug 2024, 3:27 pm

Hi guys,

Does anyone have one of the Bushranger Covert winches?

My Runva is on it's last legs. My own fault, I have to admit. It's been many years since a service and at some point water has gotten into it, the grease has emulsified and the whole thing is looking pretty worse for wear.

The Bushranger Coverts look to be developing a good rep. Price isn't crazy either.

Anyone got one? Or used one?

I haven't used the Bushranger.

On the subject of your Runva though, have you actually stripped and cleaned it since opening it up, or are you just judging by the state of the grease?

I've got the 11XP myself and went maybe 4 years without opening it, also had some ingress after water crossings.

The factory grease on the motor side was clear as honey, the grease through the planetary gears on the clutch side was blaaaaaaack  Rubber seals were still in good nick though, no noticeable drying or cracking.

Stripped the whole thing, degreased and soaked it, let everything bone dry over a few days. Gave every surface of the gears a good rub with Penrite Molygrease. Good as news.

Just because the grease is cooked doesn't necessarily mean the winch is toast. Have a go at cleaning it first, before you fork out for a new one.

As long as there's no unusual vibration, jarring gear engagement or anything like that, it might still be fine.
