Anyone get asked about shooting during traffic stops?

Post by whert » 19 May 2014, 3:34 pm

G'day,

I understand when highway patrol pull you over and put in your rego/license details that it mentioned to them if you're a licensed shooter.

Is that right?

I've been pulled over for random breath test or booze buses 4-5 times in the last year or so and it was never mentioned. I figured they might just ask if you were transporting any firearms and the time and check you were doing it safely. Nothing.

Not asking to get grilled, just interested if anyone's actually been asked about it?

Or is the whole shooter warning thing an urban myth?

No... but I've only been pulled over twice in about 5 years so that's hardly a lot of testing...

Depends on the copper.. If you were dressed in full camo's wearing your Ruger hat you might be in trouble.

I've had my gun bag on the rear seat (Dual Cab Ute) and still didn't get asked.

Nope. Never asked.

Never been pulled over in the hunting gear either though.
See you on the firing line.

No mate?

Went to my LGS today and as it happened had a cop behind me for a km before I got to the shop and was thinking about being pulled over.

You've been asked about it have ya?

About 18 months ago I got done for speeding and had my firearms licence at the time, the cop never said a word about it.

I asked a mate of mine who's a detective and he said that the computer does show you have a firearms licence but it doesn't flash up as a warning, it's just part of the general info on the screen.

Just reminded me...

I think when I've got a ticket from a fixed camera it comes titled as a 'traffic infringement'.

A few months ago I got a written paper ticket after being pulled over and it has tick boxes at the top for the type. Don't have it in front me of me but the options were something like traffic, drugs, firearms etc.

(this might be old news to people but I had never seen the paperwork before... Don't get a ticket often...)

Anyway, 'firearms' was definitely on there so I supposed that suggests your average cop does the odd check and ticket?

If you have a longarm licence you are licensed for use, carriage and possession.....so you're allowed to carry and transport your firearm, In fact I maintain that you could walk down your main street with your rifle slung over your shoulder and not be afraid of breaking any firearm law (at least in Vic) no doubt the Police would however try their best to find a law other than firearm related... in response of course to terrified phone calls from people claiming a mass murder is about to occur....after decades of conditioning by hollywood and the media to associate guns with crime and general wrong doing...I digress.

If you have a history with the law then you should expect questions and possibly a search of your vehicle or even person. So stay cool and stick to the rules.
If you're stopped, yes, they know that you have a licence, you dont need to tell them and you certainly dont want to open the exchange by stating you either have a licence or have firearms on board - could be construed as some kind of threat/ officer may feel threatened.
