G'day,

On UHF repeater channels you randomly get that Bip bip bip beep beep beep bip bip bip broadcast from time to time.

What's it supposed to be telling people? :unknown:

It's a "tone call" signal from the user's group that wakes up a radio within that group from silent mode so you don't have to hear all the chatter from the general public. If you're into scanners you'll hear similar tone signals that are mostly data transmissions from the likes of the railways. I was into amateur radio donkeys years ago and used to build frequency specific antennas from scrap TV antennas. The airspace over my house was a no fly zone for birds because of the array of antenna gear.

Your either hearing a code transmitted by the repeater to announce that the repeater is active or someone is using cell call.

If the repeater has been inactive for a while you can key up for a second and the repeater will respond with a series of tones.
Some repeaters have a recorded message that says what repeater it is and where it's located.
This is helpful as it enables users to work out if they can hit the repeater without asking for a radio check.
You can try it out on channels 1 to 8 duplex and see which repeater or repeaters you can hit.
