DPF vehicle ban in national parks / forests?

Post by VICHunter » 16 Nov 2016, 1:58 pm

One from the rumour mill here so treat accordingly.

Does anyone know anything about a potential ban or talks of one for diesel vehicles fitted with a DPF in parks and forests.

Worries over the potential fire danger from the units touching grass or plants apparently.

Anyone know anything reliable?

Diesel particulate filters only get roasting hot during a regeneration ie nuclear holocost within the filter, burning out all the captured soot and contaminates, if your doing a regen in a national park your doing it wrong.

The brand i work for has specific drive cycle parametres it needs to see before starting a regen, such as 80 kms an hour for over 100kms at a cruise so when nanna buys a diesel to go down the shops and the vehicle comes in to the dealer with the dpf light on ( the vehicle hasen't reached the parametres to do it itsel ) park it up the back and enjoy the show :p

What BS. Petrol cars are far more likey to start a fire. This well known in the chemical industry. So I guess the parks officers and police will be riding horses will they? Lol

Looks much the same as another muffler on the exhaust line.

Traps soot particles and heats them to destroy them, to be more environmentally friendly.

Starting to get more and more common in diesel vehicles now, problem is you need to do some sustained reasonable speed trying to get the DPF up to temperature to do its work.

If you're just doing 2 minute runs to the shop back and forth it eventually clogs and can be much $$$ to resolve, or eventually thousands to replace a DPF that is damaged beyond what a 'regeneration cycle' will fix.

Well i know for a fact that the new Hilux will do a "burn" at idle in a carpark, and thats after a week of only running around town, local electrician so plenty of stop-start driving.

Yep, that's the regeneration cycle I mentioned.

I glossed over that a bit. I should add I'm not a diesel mechanic and not claiming to know everything about then, I'm probably a bit out of date on them as it's been a few years since I had anything to do with a vehicle running one.

No doubt they've improved with newer vehicles.

It's a consideration to understand before you jump into buying one though.

Most new diesels have one. Will become more and more common.

It will get to the point where if the rumour were true it would mean no modern diesel being allowed in a national park. That i cant see happening. Besides parks and wildlife manage to burn park out perfectly fine by themseleves, dont think dpf will have much effect.

Just wait till they start running adblue on 4wd's

I almost set the tip face on fire once after emptying the contents of a Isuzu/Russ garbage minicompactor, it was in the middle of a burn and the rubbish piled up around the tailpipe, she was smouldering away, luckily the drott operator was able to spread the rubbish out quickly to prevent it catching.

The exhaust gasses out of an Isuzu medium duty truck during a burn are hot enough to light a cigarette/catch grass.

Still plenty of current models without them though.

A few of the Land Rovers, Isuzu DMAX, Prado too I think?

Not all done yet for at least a few years.
