Getting a roof top tent onto the racks by yourself?

Post by Deco » 23 Nov 2016, 3:02 pm

Anyone got a trick for this?

I haven't got the tent yet but seeing as the weight for them is around the 60kg mark for whatever you get, unless your a big unit who can lift the thing above your head to put it in place I imagine it's going to be real tricky to do solo.

Suggestions?

I haven't done this myself but it's an idea...

You could have a look at those kayak slider things. I don't know the proper name but companies like RhinoRack make them.

It's like 2 arms that hook on to your roof rack and go to the ground, with a round bend leading to the racks at the top. You put the kayak on the ground at the bottom, have a little speed hand winch on the other side and pull the kayak up the arms onto the roof.

Don't know what they cost, maybe you can fab something up yourself.

Dunno what else you would use if you don't have a second pair of hands to help.

Id probably use my winch via a snatch bloke on the rafters or a tree, you,d need some pretty trick rigging but it could be done

Mine stays hanging in the rafters in my shed and I just lower it on and lift it off using a couple of ropes.

I got mine off the roof by myself. Without damaging anything. To lift it on I have had my wife help me. While 60 kg doesn't sound like much it is a awkward lift as you have to lift above your head. I have mine stored in the loft in the shed at the moment. If I really wanted I could drive under and slide it on. I'd have to move abit of stuff though. Haven't used mine for awhile!

A bit of additional information to ruin everyone's suggestions now

The Rhino Rack Kayak lifter could be on the right track, but the setup comes with a bunch of stuff for mounting the Kayak itself too, not just the slider arms. $850 for the lot which is too much and wasting half of it anyway. I'll look around for something that would work as just the arms.

No winch to do with.

No shed rafters to hang it off of. Will be stored on the floor and have to be lifted.

Have to have a method for doing it truly by myself, a 'little help' from the wife doesn't work.

Easiest and cheapest way is going to be bribing the neighbour with beer currency I reckon.

I don't know how much they cost but they manual cranes that go in your hitch receiver.

For getting heavy loads into the backs of utes and that kind of thing.

If you can find one that reaches high enough and isn't a fortune (maybe second hand) that would do perfect for one person.
