Modern diesel engines have nasty carbon issues caused by all the emissions rubbish.
Ideally the right oil will keep the carbon in suspension until the oil is dumped but the modern, powerful and fuel efficient engines with their "clean" tech are just typically nasty on the inside.
A good diesel engine oil will soot up quickly because its doing its job by keeping all the carbon in suspension and stopping it from building up. A poor oil will stay cleaner for much longer because it's allowing crud to build up on internal parts.
Trying a different oil may help but possibly the best way to keep it clean inside is to get rid of the anti pollution rubbish.
What make of engine is it and what is it in ?
