Tuning up a 'slumbering giant'

Post by Grated » 05 Apr 2017, 4:48 pm

Blokes,

As we know, Toyota and others tune some of their 4x4 engines down, mostly turbo diesels I think, so that they're under relatively low levels of stress and therefore more reliable and last longer.

Does anyone have experience with aftermarket tunes for these kinds of things? Figures seem to be anywhere between 25% - 50% increase in torque.

In a nutshell I guess the question is how far can you increase the torque/power while maintaining majority of the reliability.

10%, 20%, what are peoples opinions.
Thin out their numbers, Ned!

Mmm, thin out their numbers!

Just like reloading grated keep it on the mild side, know a few with just the chip in the diesels does make a difference for not that much outlay

Look up Crispmods - he did my BT and it goes a hell of a lot better now (was a slug before now it goes real nice) plus a 3" exhaust on it made it breath better (was like an asthmatic 90yr old.

Probably a few brands that do this but it's the one I know, look up Dastek Unichip.

You can save I think 4 or 5 mappings and switch between them with a little numpad in the cabin.

Something like Factory, Off-Road, moderate performance boost, max performance.

Flick between whichever for the job at hand.

Keep it running easy when you don't need more if that makes you comfortable.

If you look at toyotas 1vd-ftv in marine guise (just bigger turbo and higher flow injectors) they pump out close to double what it does in a 4wd, so there is headroom. That being said i wouldn't fancy trying to get 300kw through toyota's drive train! People do though, a mate just had his troopy chipped and its putting 230 odd to the wheels, which is a bit excessive IMHO.I know there's also one with aftermarket turbo and high flow injectors putting out close to 300 at the wheels!

The most important thing is to keep in mind how you generate power and that it will indeed affect the life of engine or certain parts, just bumping up fuel rail pressures is bad, run a diesel rich and you hole pistons.Be sure to get any mods done by a diesel specialist and properly dyno tuned.Plug and play BS is a holed piston waiting to happen!

Im going to chip my cruiser, just waiting for warranty to finish! Only aiming for 200 at the wheels, not going to go stupid!

I modded and built a lot of cars when I was younger.

Simple rules for anything you do.

Good ain't cheap, cheap ain't good.

Do your air box up?
Not much use without exhaust opened up

Do your research, most performance gains come in packages.

Most basic one for turbos is intake, chip, exhaust. This will get your engine breathing better and provides the best bang for your buck in performance gains.

After that, it's simply a matter of how much do you want to spend.

I remember when I was a kid first thing everyone did was run out and spend $150 on a K&N panel filter.

Nothing else done.

Could have just chucked the cash in the filter box for the same result
