Joining broken dyneema rope in the field, quick/easy knot?

Post by Harper » 12 Oct 2017, 3:56 pm

All the 'how to join dyneema rope' articles and videos I'm finding are how to to it permanently when you're sitting at home at a bench with tools and time to do it like new again.

How about just a knot you can tie, quick and easy, in the field to join a broken winch line.

What knots would be suitable for this?

All ropes are weakened by knots in them. Some knots are worse than others for this. No knots will run through the fairlead or stack on the drum well either but if you just want to get winching again use a Double Sheet Bend. The Sheet Bend is typically used to join two ropes of different construction or size. In plastic ropes it's best to to do two wraps "around the tree and under the branch" (there's the scout leader in me coming out lol) to prevent unraveling under load. Depending on the load you may or may be able to untie it.
There's still a few of Wile. E Coyote's ideas that I haven't tried yet.

splice it, even a crude "doubled back" job will be better than a knot, and the stress of weight on it will make it hold to itself without adding a pinch point like a knot.

I splice exotic synthetic ropes as part of my job

Tape up the broken ends to stiffen about an inch from the end
Make an eye by folding one piece back on it's self and feed the end down through the center of the rope about 6 inches the longer the better and then poke it back out on the opposite side that it went in
Bunch up the rope to make it easier
Do the same with the other piece but make sure the 2 eyes are interlocked
Not a permanent fix but will get you out of the s**t
