Which 4x4 accessory did you buy then never use

Post by Wes » 15 Jan 2018, 10:28 am

Different spin on the usual 4x4 gear question

What did you buy for your 4x4 for off-roading then never use?

I need to get a 4x4 first... The subie doesn't really count
It'll shoot the fleas off a dog's back at five hundred yards, Tannen, and it's pointed straight at your head!

Bull bar. And hopefully it remains unused. Only had to get this one as I ended up using the last one

Geez listen to the wheel spin and all the bouncing! That and a lack of low range gears... I wouldn't be doing that in my XV.

Tirfor hand winch, cable and winch extension.

Never needed to use it, as always when needed had mates with winches or used my snatch strap.

In the 3 years I've had it, I haven't had to use my highlift jack yet. In fact It generally stays at home
My snatch strap is still in its heat shrink wrapper 2 years after buying it but I'd never leave home without it.

The only thing that has had a workout is my shovel.

I guess you could say I'm not getting very adventurous.

I'm with on one wheel
I bought a 4x4 to keep me out of trouble. Not get me into trouble.
I have a snatch strap and have never used it. That's because I know my limitations. As the man said.

Haven't used the 9500lb winch or any of the recovery gear but it's there for "just in case" purposes. I'm not a 4WD enthusiast my any measure and only purchased the Ranger cause the Commodore lacked ground clearance chasing giant bunnies across plowed paddocks although being a 6L V8 made for some exciting moments on dirt roads in the rain :)

Hey Brett, best use for the winch is straining hinge-joint fencing,
at least that's what mine got used for the most. Strain full 200m roll no worries at all.

I'm kind of glad you posted that. I've been wondering about one for a while and get reminded about them now and then when I see something online. I'm dubious as to how useful they are really, and I'd probably never be bothered stopping to put it on anyway

That's definitely my least used bit of gear. I've used it once to lift and push the truck out of a rut before I had a winch, and once to lift a wheel deep in sand to get a traction aid under.

I recently discovered a new use for it though, which is leveling the truck for the benefit of the roof top tent. If I can't find a perfectly flat bit of ground I face the truck down the slant and use the jack to raise the front the couple of inches required. Does the trick

At least you have one. You don't have to have every bit of kit under the sun, but s**t happens, at least have the bare essentials for getting out of trouble.

Just don't be that guy who goes out and gets stuck, and has no straps and no recovery points

I thought high lift jacks were designed to be left attached to roof racks whilst driving around town?

Another vote for the high lift jack. I even bought the spare pin kit and chains+shackles to use it as a hand winch and it's never even been out of its cover. Heavy as all s**t and now occupies valuable space in my shed lol. Don't know why people cart them everywhere mounted on the exterior, guess it looks cool in car parks.

However if I'm planning on doing challenging tracks without another vehicle I'll occasionally throw it in the tub, still hoping to get my money's worth haha.

In over a decade of doing a lot of off road trail driving I have only used the Hi Lift as a come along winch once. It's so slow you may as well burn the vehicle in place.... Nor do I like standing in the middle of all that tension. Depending on the terrain I have used it quite a bit successfully, raising a vehicle up, putting material into ruts, pushing a vehicle sideways off a jack or driving off the jack to negotiate obstacles.

I'd say the one accessory that is weighty and never really gets used is the Pull Pal(winch anchor). In some terrain, it will fail anyways and if you have other vehicles or trees around to help, when are you going to use it?

That's where a Hi-Lift jacks real utility is IMO. As a re-positioning device, not as a regular jack.
