LED light bars recommendation

Post by Homer » 21 Jan 2018, 7:52 am

G'Day Fella's,

I'm looking at mounting a LED light bar (600mm/24" ish) on my TLC, and was looking for any recommendation on this.

Further to this, I have noticed that the poly-carbonate protective lens, on so many LED light bars (that have been mounted on a vehicle for a while), are no longer clear but milky. This must effect the way the light up the road?

Any advice would be appreciated.

Regards
Homer

I've had a Kings (4wd Supercentre) lightbar for over a year. Works well and hasn't discoloured the lens. Great value for money.

I run a Stedi Light bar - I think it's 27" and 320w seems to do a good job of lighting up the sides of the road and about 200m in front, I wanted more light out the sides to see skippies and wombats before they decide to commit suicide on my bullbar, I also have a 22" version on the commodore and getz which the wife and daughter love.

G'day Again,

I already have a couple of Cibie Halogen lights for highway work, I was looking for a lower current drag for mountain roads and bush tracks.
Cost Sendit?, no more than I have to I suppose.

Stedi light bars are great, I bought mine for the same reasons as you, I wanted light off to the sides of the road and to light up dirt tracks etc and by god she does a great job of that.

I got a quote from ARB a few months ago for their AR40 Intensity Light Bar.

Going from memory here but I think it was $895 for the light about about $300 for the install including wiring looms and the required bits and pieces.

$1,200 for a fitted lighbar :?

Deadset rip off merchants if they want that sort of coin!.

The bloody things are dead easy to install, plug and play for the most part (well the stedi was). :drinks:

G'Day Fella's,

Thank You for those links and info BigfellaScott, John79 and Lorgar, much appreciated.

There's a 4WD show on in Queanbeyan on this weekend.
I'll go for a rubber neck on Sunday, and see if they have any Show Specials.

Mmm. Don't get me wrong, they make quality gear, I have a pair of the AR21 round lights (1 spot, 1 flood) and they work a treat. You definitely pay a premium though, I'd say ARB is the "Mercedes badge" of 4X4 gear.

I was fortunate mine where already installed on my 4X4 when I bought it second hand where the accessories basically add nothing to the resale value. My truck came with the ARB trade roof rack, winch bull bar and lights fitted and it was about $500 different to buying a stock version of the same vehicle.

I've been wanting/thinking about an extra flood light for a while now, it is tough to justify $895 for the ARB one when something like the Adventure Kings 32" or 42" can be had on special for $59 :|

Ive got Hard Korr and 4x4 supercentre neither has faded.
Both really good, Hard korr are better made but 4x the price.
I know the ebay ones tend to fade.

4x4 supercentre are good with their returns had one get some moisture in it, they replaced it and works fine now.

G'Day Fella's,

Thanks again for your advice and experience, much appreciated.

I picked up a 162 watt, x 108 LED 23" light bar from 888 Ag Lights, at the Qbn 4WD show.
It has the main center lights (72 x LED's), along with 18 + 18 LED's, as a side flair light on each side.
Once I have made some mounting brackets up and have it fitted, I'll post an image or two FYI.

Make sure to check that its legal to mount it where you want before fabbing up brackets. In Vic they have to be behind the bumper or bull bar and cannot be mounted so high they are in the drivers sight line or on the roof.
That's the roadworthy considerations, put it where you wish, just bear in mind the potential hassle.

G'Day Fella's,

Here are some images of the LED light bar I purchased and the lump of 50mm Aluminium bar, I'll machine the mounting brackets from.

You can see the rough mark out lines on the Aluminium, to show what I intend to do.
