Loctite high strength thread locker

Post by RealNick » 02 Feb 2018, 8:57 am

I tried to take a few brackets apart last night which had their nuts & bolts locked with the 263 loctite. Only take a few minutes I though... I didn't know what I was getting myself into

They could do with changing their label from "high strength" thread locker I think.

Should be called "this is basically welded on forever now" strength thread locker

You'll need to run a butane torch over it to break the seal.

Not red hot, just get a bit of heat in there and give it a twist.

Or perhaps try freezing it. Works with some. Depends on the difference in the coefficient of expansion rate of the materials glued. The greater the difference the better.

They do pretty much say that on the packet. It is more evident when you read the packets of all the strengths then you can sort of see that is going to be really hard to get apart. Even the one below that says heat may be required.

If you go to the loctite site they will tell you the only way to get it to release is heat,
Do you have access to an oxy set ( if not your local auto repair shop) you need to heat the bolt head or nut if you can get to it to just under cherry red freezing will do jack when you heat it you will smell the loctite give way I have done small bolts with an electric soldering iron but 4 mm may be pushing it .

I've always used heat whenever possible to break the high strength locktite.
You don't want to get it red hot, doing that will alter the tensile strength of your hardware.
loctite red will fail at 250 deg C

Normally I just use loctite 243 medium strength (blue) on most threads. It breaks easily without heat yet still holds together well enough for most jobs.

I used the blue on everything for my 4x4. Winch, awning, roof racks, jack/shovel mount, the lot...

All been on there for about 2 years now, 10's of thousands of km and plenty of off-roading including some real bastard corrugated roads.

I had to undo a few nuts & bolts recently to re-position my high lift jack mount and all the fasteners were still rock solid

I've read comments like this on the red loctite before. Honestly I don't get where you really need to use it when it's so crazy strong and the regular strength work so well anyway?

I believe the highest strength stuff is really intended for stuff like aviation, situations where fasteners coming lose can genuinely mean life or death.

If a bolt comes off one of your fourby accessories on the highway you pull over and sort it out once you hear it clanging about.

If they're falling out of your prop while you're flying it's a whole different story

There's a place for the red stuff.

It's sold as "permanent locking" for things like studs that you don't want to spin out when you remove the nut.

I like to use it on high stress fastners like flex plate to torque converter bolts and have used it on heavy machinery on big threads that are prone to coming loose.
I believe that the temperature rating of the red stuff is a little higher than the blue stuff as well so no doubt there's benefits to that in some applications.

Those breaker bars are the ticket. I have a 60cm bar and socket for my 4WD wheels.

Yeah I actually went and read the packet for the 263 stuff and it says permanent on studs below 25mm

I have put it on some Stainless Name escapes me but the threads that you screw into a bold hole that has stripped. I had some tapped some Aluminum with 6mm tap and it stripped after a few weeks use. I drilled it out an put in the stainless thread and shes as good as gold now better than when I first made it.

243 Blue is what my local gunshot reckons. I used it recently when putting a set of rings on my Tikka.
