Stretcher for under your swag

Post by Weepy » 08 Feb 2017, 1:37 pm

I'm thinking about getting one, but frankly I need one more thing to pack on trips like I need a hole in the head.

I think it would have to be a real comfort game changer to justify adding more to the kit.

Are you using one? Was it worth it?

I used them back when I spent months on end living out in the desert.

Ours were basically a gate frame with a floding leg at each end, tightly covered with cyclone fencing mesh.

They are indeed a game changing, rapid sleep, multi dream clip, good nights rest loophole for travelers.

Getting yourself up of the ground keeps the ants, snakes and sand out of your swag. Getting in and out of bed is far more civilized as you can sit up on the edge comfortably to remove your boots.

Keeping your swag up off the ground also helps to keep you cooler on hot nights but an extra blanket is required to put under your swag when it's cold to prevent heat loss underneath.

Obviously our heavy steel gate style strechers aren't exactly what you'll be looking for but in principle they're exactly the same.
We were able to pack them onto the roof of a 20' ex Highways Department caravan that was set up for extended stays away.

I think that if you can find a stirdy one that you can pack away, you certainly won't regret it.

Weepy, does it really matter if you have more kit? It's not like you are carrying it on your back...

weepy , I have a Dune stretcher tent all in one , love it , the things mentioned are good valid points , cool in summer , cold underneath in winter but I use a thermal mattress on top In winter, its a luxury expensive one so the comfort is great , the best thing is being off the ground the setup is 1 minute flat you can move it around once setup which is a real plus on a tight spot in the bush and another thing is that you can use your shovel and dig the ground under the feet so you sleep level!!, nothing worse than sleeping on the piss

I bought one for my trip up the cape just to get up off the ground and yeah its more to lug around but at least you wont have a rock or stick that you missed jabbing into your ribs. Its an easy guarantee of a good sleep.

I use a Coleman stretcher under my swag and have been comfortable all around Australia from the Victorian high country, the Gulf and Pilbara !!
Its the only way to go with a swag.

Stretcher all the way! Way better than than the dirt, and can be used as a prone shooting platform during the day wouldn't go back to the dirt

They don't like the narrow metal legs. Or, the snoring keeps them away.

Tale to tell. Was camping down by the river with some city friends. Next morning overheard 8 year old city kid.to my 6 year old son. " Did you hear the wild pig snorting outside the tent last night"? "That was no pig", said my son". "It was just Dad snoring".

Based on this pic a friend took last week on their veranda I'm thinking your snoring is good for keeping the snakes away. Next trip up my place, you're invited cause I hate snakes :)
