What weight rod for Bass, Golden Perch, Saratoga?

Hi guys,

I have never really fished lakes before so all this is kind of new to me.

Is there a good all-round weight to fish Bass, Golden Perch and Saratoga with or am I trying to bite off more than I can chew?

I like a wippy 5kg rod for rivers, would this be ok for Saratoga?

I'm from the other end of the country but I fish for Macquarie Perch, yellow belly and Murray Cod with a 2-4kg rod with a complex taper (fast taper butt and slow taper top end). I don't expect great results on a huge cod but they are few and far between anyway. You need something pretty delicate for bass, so I'd fish to the most likely prospect. If you want to target big togas, then rig for that trip.

I use a 6ft rod, with a eggbeater reel, line weight 3-5kg, lure 3-15gm for Bass, Saratoga etc in the Hinze dam and does the job real well.

Sounds right to me assuming you've got some patient to reel them in and employ a little technique over muscle.

I've seen plenty of guys (and got one or two myself over the years) bring in big fish on light rigs because they have the patience to reel in between letting them run.

Beware of eating Redfin out of any catchment that is a historical gold panning area. English Perch (Redfin) are known to have high mercury levels in these areas.

That said, they are pretty tasty!

Hehe... I mean reddies are tasty, not Mercury. Mercury was used to collect gold in sluices on the creek sides, so there are remnant mercury loads in many water ways, deep in the substrate. It makes it's way through the food chain.
