So, just sharing a couple secrets here - of which very few know but those that do - exploit.
Many people don’t know that NE Tasmania is a valid producer of beautiful sapphires (of every colour), ruby, topaz and other precious and semi precious stones.
One river with a beautiful camping spot in NE tassie is called moorina and the weld river runs through this tiny town.
This little river (known world over in the gem circles - some interesting you tube vids from international gemologist cos) produces some amazing stones and my friends and I have sent several parcels of stones away to be cut - see pictures. The stones, once cut - do have value - some significant.
From my observation- kids go absolutely mental finding these small but precious stones and seeing a bright blue tranluscent sapphire stone peering at you from a sieve full of bland gravel is an indescribable feeling.
If you do bother attending, You simply need a shovel, twin sieves($30) and some waders for winter or shorts for summer. The camp spot at the river/bridge has about 15 fireplaces and shops are 25-30 mins away. The place is in the blue tiers forest reserve - so with the correct permissions, you can also have a shot.
