Red Claws

Post by FNQ » 09 Jul 2020, 9:44 pm

Dropped the opera house nets in a couple my dams that in the past have had Red Claws & Yabbies.

Since pulled them a couple of times and only got single figures.

Anyone here know much about red claws, yabbies etc or why I not getting many? :unknown:

Mate I do a bit, far from the expert Though. My personal experience is that they don’t seem to be as active in the winter time.

Fresh bait seems to work better - I got told you need stinky old bait by numerous ppl but obtained much better results with fresh bait.
Also - winter sees them semi hibernate as above.
Look for areas where water level drops and can see holes in banks - good indicators.

Thanks lads & I think you're right about winter hibernation.

Still catching a few but not large numbers.

I've managed to catch them on all types of bait, potatoes (raw, half cooked, cooked), every other vegetable, cat food, tuna tins, sardines, T Bone, Tin Corn Beef. I'm of the opinion they are bottom feeders / scavengers and will eat almost anything. Was told to try sunlight soap as bait along time ago.

I've heard the soap one too, and at least they'd be clean  I have no idea about them, i've never caught one or even tried too, a bloke i know swears that the best bait it tinned pineapple, i still to this day wonder if he's just taking the piss though.

Are you talking farm dams or large impoundments? If it's farm dams, is there any vegetation left in the water? I've seen them remove all vegetation then just go overland looking for a new home.

I'm talking large farm dams approximately x2 olympic pool size in 3 of them at least and very deep. They are fenced off with good vegetation all round them but pretty clear physically in the dam. Only lobbed the nets off the banks in swallow water under 2m deep mainly cause that as far as the rope goes.

We have fish in the dam (assume native) I never seen them bigger than 10cm long. Should try a fishing rod one day. Neighbour have Barra in their dams and no red claw due to food chain.
