Weigh station "boat on car weight" meaning?

Post by Lorgar » 04 Sep 2020, 10:24 am

I'm trying to understand some terminology here.

My old man has taken his boat and trailer up to the weigh station and been given a scrawl with 2 numbers.

"Boat on trailer tare: 860kg".

That's fine.

"Boat on car: 940kg".

This is the one I don't understand. I'm obviously missing something, but clearly the boat can't weigh more than itself when it's attached to the tow ball.

Can anyone shed some light?

I would expect the exact reverse. Tow ball weight is generally about 10%.
I would weigh again.

I was going to suggest the same, that maybe they jotted the numbers down backwards.

Boat on trailer 940kg - boat on car 860kg = 80kg on the tow ball.

That's about what you'd expect.

Thanks guys.

He'll need to re-weigh it to confirm, but that's sounding logical.

Common sense really...when the boat is right way up, the air in it can escape. But when it’s upside down on the car, it’s trapping air inside and Thus, weighing more...geez.

Might it be indicating a badly balanced boat trailer lifting the back of the car up by 80kg though?

I don't think so. Having said that this can be tricky.
