300 size baitcaster reel reccomendations

Post by dnardy » 06 Jan 2022, 7:48 am

Hi all,
I'm buying a Bone Voyage XXXH as my heavy Murray Cod rod in the Murrumbidgee and Murray.

I'm looking at a 300 size baitcaster reel to pair for it, in the $300-$400 range hopefully. Shimano Tranx, Daiwa Lexa, Daiwa Tatula are all considerations.
I'm keen to throw around some 1 oz Bassman Mumblers but also want the capability to throw heavier swimbaits if I get into that.

I have limited experience with baitcasters and big cod in general with my lighter setup just being a cheap Abu Garcia combo, but it works ok when I'm not casting into a tree.

Does anyone have any experience with these or can reccomend something else?

I don't know much about fishing gear but a good mate of mine wanted to try a bait caster reel and did a bit of asking around and ended up with Abu Garcia Revo SX ( from memory) and it was a bit easier to learn on, according to him. Don't know if it is in the "300" bit your after. Hope this info helps.

Thanks bloke. Yeah my other Revo has been forgiving as a learner but I'm thinking of getting something different because I already have one.
I'm a bit the same with guns, motorbikes haha I like to try different brands.

I mostly use shimano reels, but for a swimbait rod/reel I went a 13 Fishing concept Z reel and a 13 rod in a combo for $389, good value in my book. The actual reel is really large as well, holds a heap of 50lb braid.

I ended up going for a 13Fishing Concept A3.

$389 sounds like a good buy considering the reels are usually about that much. How do you like the rod?

It’s an 8” 10-20kg rod, she’s a heavy bit of gear for casting the big Jackall and the like swimbaits.
