Who's using crab pots?

Post by Vati » 05 May 2014, 2:26 pm

Fishing time coming up :D

Interested in bringing some crabs home for dinner in future too.

How do you blokes go with crab pots?

Any tricks to filling them up or do the crabs do the work?

Cheers shooters and fishers :)

The only trick AFAIK is to get one they can't get out of after they finish your bait.

Some of the simpler/poorer ones are basically a trap with a wide tube leading in that you hope the crab doesn't walk back out of when it's done.

There are some better designed ones with small falls or constricting entrances to discourage them from getting out again after.

It's been 10 years since I did it last but I don't imagine it's changed.

Yeah I've see a couple of loose net looking ones or cage style ones.

Wasn't sure how bright a crab was at getting out of them.

They'll get out of a simple trap with long enough.

You'll come back and haul up an empty trap.

I think the cage ones are the winner if you have the space for them.

You can get ones that fold down like a flat pack too, so they're not so bad.

Use a good amount of bait, and pick them up a reasonable time later before the crabs clean it out and try to escape.

Cool.

Will have to get down and take a look at the available traps.
