Knife Sharpening in the Field

Post by mchughcb » 28 Sep 2024, 11:13 pm

Normally I don't sharpen my knives in the field. I carry a couple which is good for 5 or so sambar without having to sharpen. However if you are going to sharpen in the field I have recently bought the Sharpal 210N unit. It has diamond, ceramic and strops on it. It has an ingenious way to set variable angles so with a bit of practice you can get a knife shaving sharp in minutes from scratch

I also use several knife sharpening kits but in some recent tests with some work collegues we got outstanding results for free hand sharpening with the Sharpal 162 which can also be packed in the car and with a bigger surface area can bring the long knives back quickly. Although I still recommend a kangaroo strop with some diamond emulsion for finishing.

Too big for carrying in the field in my opinion.

I've been using a tiny little diamond plate for a few years now, a few strokes brings an edge back. Lives in my pocket all the time and is embedded with grease and sweat, maybe that helps :-)

I don't remember whether I bought it or it came with something else I bought, but it's probably outlasted and been more useful to me than whatever it came with. I do carry a bigger diamond board in my hunting kit but I rarely use it, this little one generally does what I need.

I just use a diamond hone with 400 and 600 grit sides, and a mini steel.
