Sleeping in hammocks instead of a tent?

Post by brisb » 16 Sep 2013, 11:41 am

I go camping everyone once in a while as we all do.

Loving just about every aspect of camping except for the tent....

Setting up it, cleaning it before packing it away, the pegs, poles, ropes, etc... Bit of a petty gripe here but it all just annoys me lol.

I see there are a couple of camping suppliers which seem to do pretty decent hammocks which have built in fly screen, a canopy type thing to protect against rain and so on...

Just typing the ends to 2 trees and being done instead of doing all the tent crap is an appealing thought...

Anyone do their camping with hammocks instead of a tent? How do they hold up against the rain, cold etc.

Cheers.

I highly recommend KAMMOK.
They are just releasing a weather relief shelter that actually funnels water into bottles too.

That's clever.

I'm always lugging around 4-5 litres of water when I go out.

Would be awesome to have it collecting itself at night.

Never though of that :)

I've found it's not the rain that's the problem. It's the cold.

If the weather's decent and you've got a rain shield of some sort over your hammock it's all good. Doesn't matter if it rains or not.

If it's cold enough that condensation/frost is forming on your sleeping bag inside the hammock you're in for a miserable night's camping.

Many people have retreated to the car for a miserable nights sleep after doing this I reckon
See you on the firing line.

I've been there first hand with a pair of mates.

I was happily asleep in my tent on my blow up mattress.

They went from covered in frozen condensation in the hammock, to sleeping on the dirt in front of the fire, to inside the care.

Sucks to be them

A good tent comes together quick enough, and doesn't take up that much space.

Head to your local BCF and take a look and what's available. Personally, I'd take a tent over a hammock any day...

Hmm.

Frost isn't so much of a problem here in QLD, and I only go when the weathers is decent so hopefully it won't be an issue.
