How long do you reckon you'd last in the wild?

Post by scrolllock » 11 Aug 2014, 4:11 pm

Random question here

I've been watching a bit of that survival show Naked and Afraid where it looks like they really do drop people in the rough.

(Not BG pretending to be in the wild while staying in hotels in Hawaii )

Say you were properly left in the wild - like Tom Hanks in castaway style - how long do you reckon you'd last?

I'd like to think I could last until rescued. I know I would pass over lots of edible plants though, on the list ;) hehe

It all depends on the location. If you had access to water then you'd last a lot longer . If I was going to get dropped in the middle of nowhere I'd like to have a rifle, a personal water purifier (life straw), a flint and a good knife. I can think of many other things that would come in handy but those four things would be invaluable. Supposing that I happened to have those four things and the area wasn't too inhospitable I reackon I'd last awhile :)

Depends on the kind of wild..... sub zero with no clothes or 50°c with no shade and no water and everything in between.

Assuming you mean while out hunting with the usual things you carry, I reckon quite a while. If I could find a permanent water source maybe weeks or months... But I hunt in a temperate climate and always carry some basic survival stuff which more or less lives permanently in my pack - enough to boil water, make fire, build shelter (knife/carbide sharpener, cord, space blanket, lighter/flint, metal cup+water bottle, basic first aid, phone, single AA torch/2 spare batteries)

Now that I think about it I should probably bring some sort of fire lighters in case it's wet...

Doesn't weigh much (probably less than 1kg) and I've never used it thankfully...

Hopefully I could shoot the odd feral/roo to eat as well!

Nah lets say you know something's going to happen and you have to flee.

You can take anything you want from home with you but once you're there that's it.

I meant castaway like you were on your own. Not naked without a thing

Lets say average Australian bush. Not the dessert or snow. Say 0c on cold nights and 40c max.

You got trees, hills and caves if you can find them. And you've gotta find rivers or pools for water.

Thats very forgiving conditions. I would say I could retire out there and die of old age. But I am a survivalist ;)

If I had some prep - lets say my rifle, knife, flint, matches, clothes and a swag - I'm sure I could go a couple of weeks until rescue if it was coming.

Not saying I wouldn't lose a few kg and be hungry and miserable by the end but I could do it.

A couple of months... I'd say very, very hungry and miserable

Well I live in Melbourne so if it ever happens that's what my situation will be. Keeping things to what would actually happen for me if it did.

In terms of my local bush I have been doing some research, as the bush tucker that I could get without firearms/snaring skills around here is pretty sparse.

There is plenty of water, I have been lead to believe the rhizomes of bracken fern are starchy and edible, so probably an uncomfortable couple of months.

If I have my hunting pack and rifle, then could be a fair bit longer.

In saying all that Victoria is pretty small, so I imagine I could walk to civilisation fairly easy.

with a gun, if it turns out that i can actually shoot well enough to hit my target that is, a knife and something to light a fire with, i'd last just long enough to think up a really creative way of hurting the person who dropped me into that situation!

The fat ones last the longest. Just sit back and relax, no need to hunt. Wait for the skinny ones to die of starvation first then the fat ones get to eat them too.
