Many years ago before the 1st World War there was a bloke from Scotland who came to be known as "Karamojo" Bell. He took off into what was then unexplored country around what is now known as Uganda and Kenya on Safari's for 14 months at a time, and would return with great quantities of ivory.
He was well known for hunting Elephant with calibres such as 7x57, 6.5x55 and 318 which was the biggest of his calibres. He seldom needed more than one shot to bring down an elephant. I suppose we can criticise him in retrospect for killing all those animals, but it was a different time in every way.
Along with an intimate knowledge of Elephant anatomy he also had an uncanny knack of understanding how the African people operated, and while mostly a very long way from any form of civilization, he seldom had any trouble with local tribes who had often never seen a white man before.
If you get a chance to read one of his books then I can recommend them to you as a really great read.
He died back in Scotland in 1951.
