Cold weather bag

Post by headspace » 10 May 2015, 5:57 pm

I'm going to be hunting about at an elevation of about1,000m this year and thinking my old sleeping bag may not be up to the job. I'm going to be vehicle based so don't care about a bit of weight. I'm a big bloke so I don't want some skinny sack. I need a bit of room, particularly around the shoulders. I'm thinking a genuine minus 10 at he moment. Up near Glen Innes in NSW.

I got a 4WD single cab ute with a canopy on the back. I have a double mattress in the back and just add doona and sheets. Very comfortable.

Hey mate, I just upgraded from an old roman down bag to a new Nemo Nocturn 15 bag,

http://www.paddypallin.com.au/nemo-noct ... g-bag.html

While it's not a high end mountain bag it's got a few features i like.

it's got heaps of leg room, i can sit cross legged in it.

it's got a generous hood and a neck flap that you can pull in or leave out

it's filled with 700 loft water proof treated down

it's under 1kg without it's stuff sack and compresses down nicely

and it was 20% off last month

I've used a darche' cold mountain in south NSW and north eastern Vic. Went well down bellow -6 or 7, but I always wore good socks. Bellow that and you should check out specific snow bags. I ended up with a thermally insulated mat and usually took a spare bag ( -2) to double up, only used it as well a few times when we got caught out really cold. I use a 2 man hiking tent (300gm) or roll out swag when out hunting.

You'll laugh at my cold weather camping setup - it consists of an Aero Bed, electric blanket and a down quilt! That's what we use each year when we go camping in Winter and we are always very comfortable, never cold and the genie comes in handy for running the hot water shower and all the other electrical stuff we take (kettle, toaster etc) :D

I think they call it Glamping these days - I call it doing it the smart way!

tell you what getting out of the bed in the morning wouldn't be easy but better than waking up with a sore back, frozen toes and the sniffles

Oztrail cotton canvas mega hooded sleeping bag. Minus 7 comfort rating. Bought my mate one a couple of years ago and he swears by it. He has been comfy on some frosty cold nights, he is a skinny bugger that feels the cold too. I got one recently, but mostly use a double bag with the wife. Will be using the oztrail for my planned snow camping this winter.

Thanks mate, I don't have a Paddies where I am but they do online stuff. Perhaps there's scope for the "most luxurious" camp competition with 2 good starters already. The winner gets my leaky hot water bottle.

I camped last weekend above 1500m asl. Have similar setup as North East, 2 old sleeping bags rated at 0C, aldi thermal underwear, queen size foam matress, thick pvc squares used in kid playgrounds, all this in 4wd... You could hear outside the wind rolling over the mountain, then 5 sec later starts blowing... but it was hot inside like in middle of the summer:)
Look forward going again!
Cheers

a big +1 for those EVA foam squares, we use them on the floor of our tent when camping. they're light and provide an extra layer of insulation and helping to stop the ground stealing heat from you through your compressed sleeping bag

And remember don't put blankets on top of down bags or quilts, they need the loft to work correctly!

I'm planning on getting a glamping accessory. 12v electric blanket to warm up the bed for 1/2 an hour before I go to bed on those bitter nights. Only draws about 4 amps, so no worries for juice. Considered just getting a couple of hot water bottles, but flicking a switch is easier than heating water when its -5.

I got my bag from a local camping supply place that a mate of mine works at called Bunyips. bear in mind that this could be the thin end of the wedge here because my new bag is as big as a swag I used to have, is rated to minus 4 F, or about minus 15C. It's big enough and is canvas on the outside and snuggly lining inside. Trouble with all this cold weather comfort is as you get older you have to get up in the middle of the night to drain the spuds. I'll work on an alternative to that; maybe a hose or something.
