Tassy Trout

Post by Gwion » 07 Aug 2016, 5:36 pm

The season opened yesterday, so i just pent a couple of hours wandering along the little creek that is my southern boundary. Third cast hooked a little creek brownie. Total for the arvo was 2 brownies landed bait drifting worms, 2 dropped on the drift and one miss on soft plastics where the little bugger had a few short takes and followed the lure right to my feet and had a good eye full of who was chasing him.

It's a start to the season, at least.

I generally catch and release. Particularly seeing that not far up stream there are a lot of old septic systems within meters of the creek side. Probably safe to eat but the thought of it puts me off.

Good size trout I will poach or bake with a few select goodies depending on mood and availability. Small pan size jobbies I just fry up in garlic butter.

Yeah... Sometimes hot smoked in tea leaves and hickory chips. Not bad at all with a bit of rice.

Poaching is my favorite method of cooking fish, flesh sliced, under the grill or on the bbq wrapped in foil with slices of oranges, fennel and whatever else sounds good at the time.

I can relate to you being picky about what you eat.
I know of a creek that's teaming with yabbies but there is an old pyrite mine up stream leaching cadmium and other heavy metals into the creek.
They recon the creek might come good in the next few hundred years.

Got a nice brownie last night. No pic as yet because someone else took the only pic. It was the local fishing club Xmas BBQ. It was roughly 48-50cm and i guess 2.5-3lb or slightly more. Fat, healthy hen fish..... was quite tasty on the BBQ.

I'm hungry just thinking about it.

It's been a LONG time since I ate trout ... best tasting fresh water fish around.

Atlantic salmon???
Did you catch it or buy it? Never caught a salmon as yet. They often escape from the farms around Strahan and there is a lake or two where they release ex brood stock.

Where did you try for a trout?

Just got back from an over nighter up in the highlands. Couple of hours in, couple of hours back and about 10 hours walking in between and 6 lakes fished.

Did my knee a mischief on the way out. Fishing was tough and never even pulled the fly rod out; just used plastics. Windy, foggy/misty, cold. On the final water we fished the conditions improved, the sun meekly poked it's head out and as we rounded onto the windward shore i hooked into the first fish of the day which was followed by another 6 landed and a couple dropped. Average size of fish was excellent with 5 of the 7 fish over 50cm, one just below at around 46-48cm and one scrapper at around 35cm. We were both happy lads, with my mate bagging one extra fish (which made him happy because we have been fishing 2-3 times before and he has blanked while i have landed good fish; well, it was his birthday so why not! ;) ).

We both had some near calls with good fish on another lake but failed to hook up earlier in the day.

Conditions this morning were less than pleasant and not favourable for fishing so we used some discretion and headed straight out after a cuppa and a few flicks on the camp tarn. Lucky, because the weather has turned horrible and we had a few worried of being whitted out on the exit journey with fog threatening to close right in a few times. We were both satisfied with the results for trip, anyway.

All in another good trip into the wet country. :drinks:
