Cheap, handy items you take camping???

Post by Pythonkeeper » 06 May 2017, 12:00 pm

Hey guys, thought I'd start a thread asking what cheap, handy items people like to take camping that make life easier while out in the bush, stuff you can't do without.

I'll get started with a few things I like to take.

Cable/zip ties and electrical/duct tape, not really any explanation needed for these two, they have 101 uses.
Old school wire coat hangers, great for making hooks for hanging lamps etc, cooking marshmallows, sausages or whatever over the fire, good for dodgy temporary repairs on things, hanging clothes etc etc...tie wire is good too for many uses.
Cheap nylon rope, no explanation needed.
Push bike inner tube, I have one of these in the camp box at all times, a small square of this stuff makes one of the best fire lighters out there, among other uses...
Star pickets, I use these around the fire, I have three that I construct in a H pattern to hang Billy's, camp ovens etc over the fire using short lengths of chain and S hooks so I can hang things at the level I desire.

I'll add more as I think of them if no one else posts the same.

Love the LED Light Strips - nice to be able to see what you are doing when cooking etc and really love the remotes that you can buy for them.

$5 head torches from Aldi. Give out great light and doesn't matter if you wreck them. Aldi's self inflating sleeping mats work great on a stretcher to. I was pleasantly surprised how how comfy they are for $25.
There's still a few of Wile. E Coyote's ideas that I haven't tried yet.

We had a young fella up this way a few years ago that used a log for that purpose only problem was a real brown snake was also fond of that log and must have got jealous or something and bit him right on the tackle lucky it didn't put any venom in the bite

Very funny Albat.

Cable ties, duct tape, rope, pegs and a small bag of dry twigs and based on recent experience snake bite kit from now until the end of time.

Also not small or really inexpensive but an extra sleeping bag. If one gets wet or you drastically underestimate how cold it's going to get you can put one inside the other.

The heavy duty bags that dry dog food comes in. They are tough, have a zip lock to shut in any smells and make a great rubbish bag.

I bought one of these yesterday.

https://www.snowys.com.au/cool-ice-icebox-wci-33

My daughter bought one and found a bag of ice from the servo lasts about 4 days. Heaps better than any eski I have ever owned. I was amazed. So I ordered, one the next day.
