Does sleeping near a river bother you? (the noise)

Post by Antie » 02 Aug 2017, 11:46 am

Just wondering about other peoples experience on this.

I've done a few trips, and sitting near a running river during the day with a few beers and mates is a great day.

At night though I can't help but focus on the sound of the river and find it tricky to sleep some times.

Anyone the same?

Yes! It annoys the hell out of me, i keep a set of ear plugs in the swag but as i'm usually by myself deep in the bush i try not to use them, best to keep a few hundred metres away i think

I focus on the noise too.

With ear plugs I focus on the feeling of the ear plugs.

I like it in the distance. Makes me wanna pee too. I don't wear ear plugs because pumas, drop bears or tassie tigers might sneak up on me. :o

I can't hear water over the cicadas - I have tinnitus ;-)
But I don't like to camp close to water as it keeps wildlife away from their water source.

From the crashing around in the bush i hear when camped near rivers, i'm not keeping anything away from it's water source!

- Big River
- Big River
- Kiewa
- Mitta
- Snowy Creek
- Lightening Creek
- Ovens
- West Ovens

Did i ever have trouble sleeping because of the sound of the river?
Nope
Did i ever have trouble sleeping because of either wild dogs howling or noisy campers near by?
Yep

Been woken by deer crashing down though the bush, foxes raiding my supplies and stealing my trangia, some unknown creature snuffling around the tent, trees crashing in a storm in the distance, people rocking into a well used camp site late at night; never by the the sound of a river, though.

And Zombies, they will not cross water [like foxes] so a Billabong is a good place to camp, make the dog sleep out on the landward side and you will not get bitten.

Way up North you should tether a Socialist between your camp and the water, crocs love them and they will make very loud whinging noises so as to awake you to danger.

I caught a coach up to Darwin to do a one-in-eight pistol shoot when I was working in the Kimberley, got into town in the evening. Scoffed a pie and a Mars bar, then wandered across the park in the middle of town at the war memorial looking for a spot to sleep. It was all pretty open so I climbed over the fence and into the bush for some privacy. Didn't get a lot of sleep due to the constant rattling of the birds in the bush. At dawn I wandered back into town for a feed, and mentioned the night life keeping me up. They asked me where I slept, then told me that wasn't birds, that was crocs. The fence was there to keep them out of the town!!!!

Turned out to be great weekend though. I got a taxi out to the range only to find the Army there practicing for the Brunei Skill-at-Arms competition. I hung around the guys that were practicing with their Brownings on the IPSC range until a lieutenant-colonel showed up. Got chatting with him, explained I was stuck there for the shoot until I could get a taxi back into town in time for the coach back to Turkey Creek. He bundled me into his Defender and took me around while he kept an eye on proceedings on two more ranges where they were practicing with F88's and Bren Guns :-)

The only time I have been truly scared camping by a river was back when I was about twelve and dad took me fishing at shady camp in the nt. The crocs made that much noise barkin and growling it was hard to hear the water Goin over the barrage.

Ok. To be fair I would probably have trouble sleeping in that situation too. It's not the actual river that is the problem though. It's those, as you so humously put it, handbags with teeth!!!

Not at all I love it.. Find it very relaxing, same with waves at the beach... As for the handbags, they usually leave you alone if you have a camp fire between you and them.Failing that then my dog would always let me know if one came anywhere near camp  Probably would have been a good strategy to get the missus to sleep on that side too ;) , god help them if they wake her up
