Smoothing out the area for your tent or swag

Post by RealNick » 11 Feb 2018, 8:13 pm

Does anyone take anything with them camping to do this?

I've had a bad run lately of ending up in spots with crappy ground for the tent.

Kind of a pain to carry about but I'm thinking of a small metal rake maybe?

Anyone do it? Worth it?

I watch where i set up and move/avoid the big stuff but the leaves and small bits are good for drainage

Had a few average nights setting up in the dark but nothing to bad

Also an added plus if you leave it pretty much the same and pick a good spot ( sometimes your stuck between a rock and a hard place ) it can make it harder for anyone trying to track you etc

Push light stuff aside with my shoes

Any stubborn rocks or tree roots just mash into the ground with the butt end of my Fiskars axe

1L of diesel and a match works well for removing unwanted growth :)

Back when I was a Boy (heard that before and thought I would never say such a thing) when camping and sleeping on the ground we used to cut the bracken and put that under the tent as a bit of a mattress, worked pretty well as long as you didnt get a stem poking you in the back

Read the ground better.....
True, not so easy in some places but i havent needed move more than a few sticks or a rock in about 20 years or more. I do recall setting ip in some pretty s**ty spots back in the day, though.

Kind of contradicting your own point there mate.

Reading it doesn't help if the ground is just plain s**t

I don't need to anymore, since buying a tentcot, the swags get very little use these days.
