M6 Scout 22LR/.410 "Survival Rifle"

Hey guys,

I haven't seen much discussion about the M6 Scout on these forums so I thought I would throw it out there.

The history of them is really cool and they have a bit of a cult following online. Basically they're the civilian version of the M6 Aircrew survival weapon (which has shorter 14" barrels).

They come in a few different variants: 22 Hornet/410. 22WMR/410 and 22LR/410 all in parkerised and Stainless. Unfortunately they're all pretty rare but they do come up for sale every now and then.

I have another Combo gun I'll be doing a review on in future. A Savage Model 24 F - 223 over 12G. Initial tests on it appear good! It will make an awesome fox gun!

Hey Gwion,

I have not wrapped the barrels as yet. I'm still deciding as the scope rail extends over the barrels so it might interfere with it.

As for shooting slugs, it's actually pretty good. I was hitting a steel plate at 50m and I'd say the group was around 3" with 3 shots. Unfortunately the camera batteries had died before I could get that on film.

How's the 223McShort coming along?

The missed clay? you could have called a hit, probably wouldnt have noticed

Looks like the bottom photo has wrapped barrels???

The McShort has been shelved due to cash flow and the inability of PTG to send what i ordered.

I have the reamer, which took month and months... no GO gauge with it.... email... phone call... yeah yeah, oh, we'll send it ASAP... 1 year later..... nothin'!

I'll get back on their butts to send it as i paid for it 18months ago!!!

Had similar issue with getting custom dies made... wont say who but they were VERY unreliable as to how and when they would get to making them.

There are other priorities right now, so it might be a year or more before i get the custom forming and sizing dies made, get a DBM functionally sorted to reliably feed the short round and get the go gauge so the barrel can be rechambered.

PS: ended up spending my project funds on knife making gear too!

Thanks mate! Yup i know the drilling you're talking about. They issued them to bomber crews when fighting over North Africa. You'd need the 9.3x74 for some of the game out there!

You've gota be honest with your hits and misses! Plus it means next time when I don't miss, I'll feel like I've achieved something hahaha.

That's just a random photo off the net. I don't really have any nice photos of mine yet. I'll have to work on that.

As for the 223short. Damn man. I was really looking forward to seeing how that went. I guess it's just one of those things.

Imagine the same format, small compact collapsible in a 12g/308win...would make it a heap more useful than the 22LR/410, not that those are not useful... but look how tiny those 410s are...

Luftwaffe M30 Drilling that was manufactured by J.P. Sauer & Sons in 1941, advertised 2010 indicated USD9,500 to 16,000 dont know what it sold for (edit to add, sold for $9200 in 2010);

Not exactly compact, though, is it!?
Imagine carrying that thing for days and days after ditching into the dessert and being chased by lions while trying to lay low so you don't get shot at!!!

Broken in 2 pieces it would be as compact enough... I have a very small heavy canvas SG bag/carrier, 2 sleeves rolled together and fastened with a buckle thats as long as the barrels and the width of the 2 parts held firmly together... just as this drilling would be 28inches broken...throw it in the backpack (did they have such conveniences in 1941??)

I dont think these guys encountered many lions... most would have fallen over Europe, France, Eastern parts of Euro...wild boar country - perfect medicine is the '74

They're such a work of art! Meanwhile America is just stamping these M6's together haha!

Some of the modern Merkel and Blazar drillings are amazing also.

They probably had a contract for one firearm that take SG rounds as well as a powerful centrefire... the Germans never did cheap(and quick) and nasty...

It's around 19" long (basically the overall barrel length) and around 10" wide when folded.

You can break it apart and stack them on top of each other and the package gets even smaller at 19" long by 6" wide and around 2.5" tall. Perfect for the backpack!
