Lithgow Model 12 Iron Sight Question

Post by Hawkalloy » 25 Oct 2024, 5:58 am

Hi

I am bringing my grandfather's Model 12 back to life; I don't believe it had been shot in over 50 years.

I've now fixed the firing pin issue and was able to successfully fire it last night for the first time.

Unfortunately, at 10m it is shooting around 150mm too high with the rear sight at the lowest setting. At 25m it wasn't even hitting the target.

Where do I start? Can the front sight be replaced with a taller one (and where would I find such a thing)? Or should I be looking at something else more obvious?

Thanks
Scott

Are you using the factory rear sight mounted on the barrel, or is there a peep sight fitted?
These rifles are much easier to shoot with a peep sight (for my aging eyes anyway). The peep sight mounts onto the 2 small screw holes on the left rear of the receiver. They appear on eBay for sale every so often.

You can most likely find a taller front sight easily enough, you just need to work out the size of the dovetail. I'd be inclined to order a blade style one that's a bit longer than you think you need, you can always file it down if need be

Thanks BigPete, I've just used an online calculator and the theoretical height on the front sight would be near 20mm, which is way too high (and not obviously readily available). I think I'll need to get a gunsmith to suss out the issue. Appreciate your feedback.

Thanks Tinker. I am currently trying to use the standard sights. Agreed my 57 yo old eyes are not coping at all. I have to get the rifle somewhere near zero, but shortly thereafter a peep sight will be on the list to keep the rifle period correct, and usable for me. Thanks for the advice.

"20mm"

Strange, are you able to upload pics of current sights?
Someone may spot the issue.
