A mate just got a Savage in .17 HMR that's silly accurate, and silly cheap. He's also got a Savage .22lr and a Savage .223 as well. He's seriously savage! And a damn good shot. The accutrigger is nice, too.

G'day,

I've got a Weihrauch 66P in .22 Magnum. It's very accurate with Hornady V-Max in 30 gr. I probably shoot more foxes and hares with it than my centrefires. I had it bedded by the local [Ballarat] gunsmith Kevin Grinter. Once I got the tension right on the action bolts groups tightened up to under 3/4" at 100 yards. Mine has a two-stage trigger set at about 8oz. I believe those with the lighter two-stage trigger are no longer imported due to legislation. It was a bit expensive though. I've mounted a PARD NV 008 on it. I prefer to use it when I'm shooting close to neighbours' properties as it's a bit quieter than my centrefires.

Ll the hate for 455s, they are essentially 452's with removeable barrels to easily convert to 22lr and 17hmr.
They have the 22lr barrel for $120 so get yourself a used cz455 22wmr, and then u can spend $120 and get a 22lr barrel 2 guns in one.

They go cheap used. I have 452 455 and 457. Lux and jaguar. The both 455 shoot better than both 452s

Slightly better fit and finish than the 452 as well. Another bolt as well. Same design.

Also if you dmage barrel u can always replace it easily.

I'd heard the 455 had increased warranty issues. You can have great engineering but if the guns arent rolling off the production line with the same consistency customers will cotton on.

Look for a old secondhand Anschutz.22 mag .
Bought my old one for $450 about 3 years ago , the wood was a bit rough ( not bad , but used ) .
You see good examples in the $600-$900 region and I guarantee that they all will shoot .
Mine loves Hornady 30gn and CCI 35gn , they both shoot one hole groups at 50m .
I don’t use it much , but can’t see myself selling it anytime soon because I just can’t get rid of it because it just works and is bloody accurate .
A designer knows they have achieved perfection , not when there is nothing left to add , but when there is nothing left to take away .

Regarding the CZ455
The ejector is a problem, the way it gets in the way of a cleaning rod. Another forum says you can get around it by using a 0.17 calibre rod and 0.22 cal fittings.
Others might like to comment :)

Pests out to 140yards was one of the tasks I used to use one for. Also shooting medium sized pigs over night baits on plantations near to town where farmer dictated 22mag as largest calibre he wanted used. Mostly headshots under 40 yards, occasional boiler room shots which would have the pig run a ways and usually be found dead in the morning.

You can just make some "lighter" loads for 222 or 223. Easy peasy

Foxes, cats, hares, rabbits. The little rifle doesn't weigh much and ammunition is cheaper than centre-fire. It's a great walk-about rifle.

Too much stuffing around doing light loads. Buy a box of 50 rounds of 22mag ammo and go shoot. Cases can fall wherever……

It's not the cheapest option out there but I really like my CZ457 - have 22lr and 22wmr barrel kits for it. It stays as a 22mag as I have 2 othet 22s, and it groups really well with most 30gr or 40gr stuff, except winchester oddly enough. I use it fairly regularly as a fox remover around our sheep as it's really quiet with the 24 inch barrel. Would buy one again without hesitation.
