Whats this New Savage A22 latching repeater action?

Post by TBJ » 14 Jun 2018, 12:55 pm

Saw this the other day online and don't entirely know what is is and how it works? is it essentially like the Verney Carron Speedline based on the A22 Semi Auto, i.e. locks the bolt back and has a button/lever to release the bolt? Apparently its Cat A.
Seems to be 3 versions the Pro-Varmint and standard as well as a Stainless.

Apparently its "nothing like the Verney Carron" according to my gundealer who is selling them. For some reason they won't elaborate on the mechanism except to say that it is a blowback system. based on the photos to me it looks exactly how you mentioned, e.g the lever release (pictured just before the magwell) releases the bolt

yeah thats what I figured but yeah heard something similar to the "nothing like a Verney" so I thought I'd ask if anyone actually knew anything about em, and by blowback, doesn't that just mean that the bolt comes back once its been shot with the force of the gas from the shot? Looks cool though, could be good for bunny busting.

Blowback is like the Ruger 10/22 action in that it is the recoil from the case that moves the action back rather than siphoning off any gas from the barrel to actuate the action. I wonder if mods would make it semi auto not that I am suggesting that or would like o be caught with a modified action. I always wondered about mods to the 10/22 to make them full auto. I am sure a faulty trigger would probably cause something like that to happen.

that Ruger 10/22 action was just so well engineered a good solid block of steel that just slid perfectly. Its a long time ago so I am sure I remember it better than it really was. Mine was only a carbine as well may have given better accuracy with a custom barrel?

And from memory the Verney Carron is gas piston, so it makes sense that a dealer would say it was nothing like the VC,

That said, given the VC shotgun has now been held up on classification, if I was a dealer I reckon I'd say "its nothing like the Verney Carron" regardless.

yeah fair enough, I am quite intrigued by this new gun though, could be good, sadly its Savage so it could just as easily be terrible as it could be brilliant.

These are actually a delayed blowback action so while close to the 10/22 there is a difference. There's a mechanical interrupter on the bolt to delay it's opening after firing, they did this so they could also offer the rifle in 17HMR & 22Mag chamberings.

Thanks for this info, anyone ever used a semi auto A22? just wondering what they are like, quality and accuracy like against something like a CZ 452/3/5?

Also just thought, if this does half decently what do you reckon the chances are of Ruger making a 10/22 with a bolt release like this? Cos that I would definitely buy without a second though.

Seems a weird place for the bolt release.
Would have to use your trigger finger.
The VC uses your thumb.

I also thought this, but figured that was the easiest place to put it, since they're making it from an already mass produced firearm, where as the VC was designed around that idea and they still didn't get it right, your thumb would have to be an extra inch long to be able to do it properly and comfortably.

Bolt release on my warwick (and I assume all ARs) is in a good spot also. Easy access for your thumb.

I was thinking the same thing it would just take some sort of bolt lock to be added. The main thing stopping something like this is probably the numbers in demand. If only for Australia it is such a small market.

However looking at the American Savage website the A22 looks the same but does not have the bolt catch. so it must have been added purely for other markets perhaps there is hope. only $400 in the US

Base model is $648 in VIC.

I love this, all you c*** are like oooooooo I'd buy it if... And then you bitch and moan that nobody makes stuff for us or price is too high. Buy it, demonstrate demand and then buy another (and sell the first one if you're inclined) when it's out. Simple.

Hey JS dont get your Knickers in a knot :D Not complaining on the price just a statement in fact there are several different models in the US that range in price from $400-$500. So even the $995 I saw at the Barn is not over the top given exchange rates, shipping, local transport and all the BS.
I think I will put my name down for one. I would probably prefer a Ruger just because of all the aftermarket stuff available. But like you said you can always buy another. :)
