Gday fellas
I have a harris bipod which I need to attach to my Henry H001 lever rifle .
What's the best way ? Any ideas ?
I'd prefer not to drill but I may have to .
Cheers.

no where does Henry show where to fit a bipod I think you would have to remove the forearm to fit a swivel

It's never occurred to me to mount a bipod on it, but I got it out just now for a look.
Ideally, I would order another front barrel band, modify it for the bipod mount, and mount it behind the original one.

Do you have a pic rail or a sling swivel mount?
If you have a sling-swivel mounted bipod you'll need the two surfaces that it tightens down against, so maybe start with one of these - https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Xhunter-Picatinny-Slot-Sling-Swivel-Stud-Bipod-Adapter-For-Rifle-Picatinny-Rail/282511749064

You could buy a .430" sling swivel mount for the tube and adapt that but the barrel is significantly more rigid than the tube.
https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Rifle-Detachable-Sling-Swivels-for-22-Rifles-and-Carbines-with-Dia-420-470/302131448124

You could also try this but you'll need longer screws - https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Tactical-Hunting-Rail-20mm-Picatinny-Weaver-Barrel-Mount-Scope-Flashlight-Laser/292441138053

You got me intrigued so I just tried it myself :-)
Now I'm going to have to go and do some shooting to see if I like it!

G'day Blade, silly question, but is that clamp going to effect poi or harmonics, being clamped on the barrel?

It'll be interesting to hear your results.

It's a lever-action, with a magazine tube hanging off the end of the barrel, of a varying weight and spring tension according to round count, and the forend also hangs off the barrel - I really don't think barrel harmonics are a thing with these designs :-)

But I will try it just to see if point of impact changes.

I didn't know whether it would or not, never having owned or used a lever gun.

Costs me nothing to ask a silly question, and I'll often learn from it.

Well, very interesting indeed!
Will post a pic of the targets once I have it annotated.
You almost certainly don't want to hang a bipod off this rifle, unless you use a long cantilever mount back to the receiver.

A hundred rounds later!

I put up an A3 sheet at 50m and went prone in the grass - very hot out there!

I didn't adjust the scope at all. All shots were aimed at the bottom corner of the pieces of tape.

The blue groups were aimed at the middle targets (blue crosses), off the bipod - about 150mm high.
The green groups were aimed at the bottom targets (green crosses), bipod folded rearward, forend rested in the MTM rest - about 45mm high.
The orange groups were aimed at the middle targets (blue crosses), bipod removed, clamp retained, rested - pretty much right on elevation. The left-most orange group is mostly my own effort, I was getting hot.
The red groups were aimed at the middle targets, with the bipod and the clamp removed, rested - about 210mm low.

I should've confirmed zero before installing the bipod but I hadn't even zeroed the scope at that point. The difference between the rested bare rifle though, and shooting off the bipod is extreme, far more than I would've imagined. 360mm difference in elevation at just 50m!

So, the bipod would probably work fine if you only ever shoot using the bipod. The differences in point of impact between the bipod, folded or removed (but the clamp retained for bipod use) are very significant. It also shows accuracy is equally effected. I think there is potentially a slight loss of accuracy even shooting off the bipod, though it's near enough to perhaps be unrelated.

I should add that mounting a scope on this is not great due to the low comb - I have absolutely no contact between my face and the stock despite the scope being so low as to be almost touching the rear sight - not conducive to accurate shooting.

I'm glad I tried it as I would never have figured that much difference was possible :-)
I cut my Norinco JW21 down to a five-round tube, and removed the tube and forend connections to the barrel on the assumption that a floated barrel is better. Now that I've actually seen the potential problem I may have to complete my fully-floated conversion, and do the Henry as well. I'll have to try this experiment with the .44, the heavier barrel may make some difference.
