if you can stretch the budget another $60 or so you could probably get a Leupold Freedom 3-9x40 I have them on my 243 & 308 and love them..... I'll be ripping the Bushnell Elite off my 223 and putting one on it too

Do you rate the Leupold Freedom over the Bushnell? Is your existing Bushnell also 3-9?

The Bushnell is a Bushnell 3500 Elite 3-9x40 and it just doesn’t compare to the Leupold Freedom late in the afternoon or at night even in daylight the Leupold our does the Bushnell easily

That is interesting, have you had a look at the Bushnell AR 18x? I am not saying that the optics are outstanding but nor is the Leupold budget line. With double the magnification and being significantly cheaper, it looks like not a bad thing.

The budget is the limiting factor here - in my exp the cheaper Leo’s don’t seem to offer that much over or above anything else in the 2-250 range...so really, your trying to pick the best of that particular range and they all seem to be much as much to that price point. I ve found the AR scope pretty decent to 200m but a 9x scope is going to struggle to see small 1” targets at that distance.
But then I look through the Leo 20 x and I immediately start hating on the AR...which isn’t really fair given the Leo is about 1200 now. In all honesty, I’ve found the cheapish bushnell banner dusk/dawn to be a pretty decent 9x scope - more than okay for hunting.

My old eyes really appreciate the extra magnification and I think the .223 warrants it. I have 4.5-16 x 50 cheapie and it does the job. If I had the spare cash I'd opt for something nicer but, until it breaks....
I have a Leupold VX-1 3-9 x 40 on my .270 because that is used differently. It's a basic model but good for the price.
