Post by CrackThump » 26 Feb 2019, 6:42 pm

Ok, so Im new and inexperienced, maybe someone can shed some light on this....

I came across this on the interwebs last night,,, Muzzle brakes for 22LR... and my first thought was WHY EVEN. ???

but... you know.. theyre commercially available even here in Straya, so maybe theres a good reason for them.

Does anyone have or use one. ? seen one in action. ? Know why they even. ?

Whats it all about maaaaan.???

Ummmm wa? Really? I’ve never seen nor heard of one for a 22...and I do not understand why — unless it’s not a muzzle brake but more like a...quiet achiever sold as a brake?

While i'm personally not a muzzle break fan, i was told they will disguise the direction your shot comes from for your prey, i know a guy who uses one on a 22 for taking out bunnies on his farm, he says with it on they just ignore their mates dropping around them and he can get a few before they react but without it they scatter after the first shot. Haven't seen it first hand but i have no reason to doubt him.

Then again it could be for the HUGE recoil of the 22lr

I doubt they have any measurable effect on a .22LR, but any muzzle device is good to protect the crown and prevent plugging a muzzle with mud.
I have a long one on one of my Rugers, but only because I use the same brakes on centrefires as well..

I would think they would have an effect even on a 22...my thought being anything to help a rifle stay put while the bullet is hurtling down the choob is surely going to have a good effect on the outcome....

Im not saying necessary, but good.

So blade, have you tried yours with & without & see if it makes a difference in the printed result...?

Maybe it might have an effect if the rifle is left to free recoil...? :unknown:

Yes, I've fired all my rifles with and without the brakes with no difference at the target, but I've not noticed any difference in recoil on the .22LR's.

Funnily enough Tassie, the website I browsed DID have one model that came with an "removable outer sleeve" included.... that did tend to makenit look suspiciously a little bit sonewhat like a quiet achiever lol

I think it's partially a market void being filled. Many .22's are coming out with a threaded barrel. The majority of us can't put a suppressor on it, but the thread is there. People want to put 'something' on the threaded barrel. Ergo: .22lr brakes.

Re: 22LR Muzzle Brakes

A muzzle brake on a 22LR rifle can serve only a few possible purposes, aesthetics, crown protection and sound distribution. Recoil reduction isn't in the mix due to the insignificant amounts of energy involved compared to the mass of the rifle.

On the other hand, with a pistol a compensator can be very effective in reducing muzzle jump on light pistols.

Then we have barrel tuners....we cannot reload 22LR to suit the harmonics of the barrel so a tuner is used to adjust barrel length to hit the harmonic.
