Hi There,
Just joined today actually.
Iv'e got a Zastava 17 HMR & quite awhile back bought a brick of 500 Federal Premium V-Max HV poly tipped. 17 gr. Had read a bit about various brands neck splitting, one guy said they already had a neck split from brand new out of the box. I still had 450 rounds, put on my reader glasses today & checked fairly quickly the whole 450 rounds, sure enough there was 5 rounds already had a distinct split in the necks brand new out of the box.
When I need to buy a new lot I'll also check the lot ! ( I'm 76 years old been shooting for about 64 yrs ! )
Regards
Brunka.

Fairly common to get split necks on the 17hmr a few here and there 5 out of 450 isn't too bad at all. Stick to fedral and cci and youll be right personally have found the winchester stuff will split 1 every second shot.

They are a hot little round.I guess if the chamber is a little loose the necks will split.I had the Ruger lever gun in 17 HMR but my mate coveted it real bad and I needed loot so I transfered it to him

Hi There,
The cases with the split necks were in the boxes unfired, brand new. I have only fired one box of 50 of the 500 brick I bought & did notice 1 fired round with a neck split, didn't think the rifle chamber was that loose it allowed the case to neck split ! A while back I built up a .375 H&H magnum & never got one split in all my reloading, admittedly I was reloading at the bottom end to reduce the rather heavy recoil especially off the bench ! I am a retired TAFE Teacher of Toolmaking & measured the wall thickness of the 17 HMR necks with digital callipers, they measured 0.010", ten thou. pretty thin. Eh ! I have put the 5 new rounds with splits aside, may try them out to see what happens, the Zastava bolt locks a fair way into the receiver so shouldn't get any blow back from the breech face at the barrel, might just throw them out !
Regards,
Brunka.

I shoot 20g XTP Hornady all day long out of my Zastava mp17. Groups the best from what I've tried too!

Bought the brick of 500 Federal because HPGS had one of their super Saturday's big discount sales, think I paid about $90.00 less for the brick than anyone else was charging, despite everyone telling me to try a heap of different brands etc. just thought I would wear how they shot, looks like I was lucky, they shoot a 5 mm group at the 50 metre St Mary's SSAA indoor range off the bipod & a rear bag I made myself from a piece of thick denim sewed up & filled with cheap dry rice, get lost in the donga can empty it into a small army canteen pan & Hexamine stove I have and have a good feed of cooked rice for a couple of days !
