my Ruger ranch 556 drops about 7 inch at 250 yard (230m) the wind blows 5 shot apart around 4 inches (about 1.6MOA) but vertically not too bad, around 0.6MOA

Yeah its the short barrel on em - that lost velocity really hurts when there's a fluctuating crosswind  and the blackout is even more susceptible. All said and done, the 223 is an inherently more accurate round; for target shooting it's a bit of a no-brainer. I just like the novelty factor of the blk right now - i'll come crawling back to the fast 22cal in due time, perhaps once my 1:8 .224 Swan barrel finally arrives... :D
At what point does lack of maintenance become patina?

I shoot a lot of pest birds here on our homestead orchard. there are a group of trees about 145m away that they consistently go land in when you start laying them to waste, my little Ruger American with the short barrel can despatch them without any effort out at that distance, every shot with either CCI or Federal ammo. I love rugers.

Infact I would go as far as saying that rugers are the only plastic stock rifles I would ever own.
